Job Title: Communications and Engagement Officer

Salary: Grade 6 - £34,237 to £37,563 per year
Directorate: Resources
Hours: 37 hours per week | Permanent
Location: Central Headquarters, Ripley, Derbyshire

Are you a strong communicator who knows how to turn complex information into clear, engaging content? Do you enjoy finding different ways to reach people, understand what matters to them and make sure their voices are heard?

We’re looking for a Communications and Engagement Officer to join our Communications and Performance team at Amber Valley Borough Council.

This is a varied role with the opportunity to work across the full range of council services. One day you might be developing a communications campaign or responding to a media enquiry, and the next you could be planning a public consultation, creating social media content or analysing feedback to help shape a service.

You’ll create content for a range of digital and traditional channels, support media relations and internal communications, and help plan and deliver campaigns that inform residents and encourage positive behaviour change.

Engagement is an important part of the role too. You’ll help us make sure we’re not just communicating with our communities but listening to them. You’ll support consultations, surveys, focus groups and engagement activities, turning what people tell us into clear insight and recommendations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
