About The Organisation
Public Health Scotland launched on 1st April 2020 as a national health board, employing around 1200 people, with an annual budget of around £101 million. The Post
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team and play a key role in shaping how Public Health Scotland (PHS) communicates with the public, its partners and the media. We’re looking for a proactive Communications and Marketing Officer who works collaboratively to translate complex public health issues into clear, engaging communications that engage, inform and support people across Scotland.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Work across an aligned and multidisciplinary team to coordinate and support, plan and deliver targeted communications and marketing activity
- Plan and create high quality, memorable social media content (including short videos) using tools such as Canva and where applicable working with the team and media buyer to plan audience-specific strategic paid-media approaches
- Evaluate the success and impact of the work of the team
- Provide dynamic, on the ground input across the communication and marketing functions
- Support responses to media enquiries and internal requests from across PHS
- Liaise with partners including Scottish Government, charities, NHS 24, COSLA, health boards and the third sector to co-ordinate and maximise communications opportunities
- Spot proactive opportunities to promote, position and protect our reputation and strengthen the visibility and impact of our work
The Candidate
Success in this role requires a proactive stance, great people skills, an eye for detail and experience in planning and developing motivating content. Experience of working in a busy communications or marketing environment would be helpful as would an understanding and interest of the media and wider political and social landscape in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Location and Working Pattern
The post is based in either Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Bothwell Street, Glasgow. We are currently hybrid working; therefore, you will be expected to spend time in both PHS offices as well as the option to work at home.
- Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week.
- PHS is a flexible employer, and we are happy to discuss requests for alternative working patterns.
- During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need, you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service.
- It is a condition of this employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK for the post in which you will be employed with PHS.
