Interim Internal Communications Manager - Transformation

A prestigious public sector organisation in central London is currently recruiting for an Interim Internal Communications Manager - Transformation to join the organisation on an initial 6-month day rate contract. They are in a great location with a role that offers hybrid working with 3 days on site required per week.

This role offers a unique opportunity to play a critical role in one of the most significant organisational transformation programmes currently underway in local government, helping to engage and inspire over 4,000 employees across more than 70 locations.

The organisation is delivering an ambitious transformation agenda designed to modernise services, improve ways of working and deliver its long-term Corporate Plan and People Strategy.

As a result, employee engagement and internal communications sit at the heart of the programme and are considered key enablers of successful transformation.

Reporting to the Head of Transformation Communications, and working closely with senior leaders, programme directors and communications professionals, the Internal Communications Manager will lead the development and delivery of strategic communications and engagement activity across a portfolio of high-profile transformation programmes.

This is a highly visible position that will shape how major organisational change is communicated across the organisation, ensuring colleagues remain informed, engaged and connected throughout the transformation journey.

The Ideal Candidate

You will be an experienced internal communications professional with a strong track record of supporting large-scale change and transformation programmes within complex organisations.

You will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong stakeholder management capability and the ability to translate complex programme activity into engaging and accessible messages for a wide range of audiences.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of internal communications strategies supporting major transformation and change programmes.
  • Manage organisation-wide engagement campaigns designed to support business change and employee adoption.
  • Partner with Programme Directors, senior leaders and stakeholders to develop clear and compelling messaging.
  • Lead communications activity across major technology, people and organisational transformation initiatives.
  • Produce high-quality materials across a variety of channels including intranet, leadership briefings and digital platforms.
  • Oversee content development, copywriting and editorial standards across transformation programmes.
  • Develop and implement employee engagement initiatives that support cultural and organisational change.
  • Provide expert communications advice and support to departments across the organisation.
  • Establish measurement frameworks to assess the effectiveness and impact of engagement campaigns.
  • Manage and develop the Internal Communications Officer, supporting their professional development and performance.
  • Build strong working relationships with stakeholders across the organisation to identify engagement opportunities and share best practice.
  • Support the wider transformation and people agendas through innovative engagement activity.

Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience managing internal communications programmes within large, complex organisations.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting major change, transformation or organisational development programmes.
  • Proven expertise in developing and delivering strategic employee engagement and communications campaigns.
  • Experience advising and influencing senior leaders and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of employee engagement, organisational culture and transformation communications.
  • Excellent writing, editing and content creation skills across a range of communication channels.
  • Experience measuring campaign effectiveness and using insight to improve performance.
  • Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Previous line management experience with the ability to develop and motivate team members.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Degree educated, or able to demonstrate equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.
