Job Purpose
- To build positive relationships with Elected Members, officers, partners, media organisations, and the community by supporting the delivery of professional internal and external communications activities and events that positively promote the Council, its corporate and civic activities, strategies, services, and successes.
- To support and be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of advice, support, and action on corporate communications, media, and events. Support people across the Council’s service units, projects, and activities to communicate well on behalf of the organisation.
- To support and be responsible for the day-to-day development and effective use of digital technology for content creation, communication, and marketing, delivering high-quality, engaging content that enhances the Authority’s communication channels.
Main Activities (Corporate)
- Be committed to the Council’s Vision and carry out work within the spirit and intention of its core values.
- An understanding and awareness of the concept of “Making Every Contact Count” (MECC), attending training where necessary.
- The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All employees are expected to always uphold & follow our safeguarding policies and procedures and report any concerns immediately.
- Contribute to the delivery and review of service standards, quality, and performance targets in accordance with Corporate delivery and business plans.
- To contribute to the production of relevant corporate delivery plans and the annual Service Unit business plan.
- To ensure that due regard is given to all enquiries, requests, and complaints from Elected Members and customers, and ensure that any necessary action is taken efficiently.
- To foster and contribute to the creation of an open environment within the Council, where employees feel supported, involved, and consulted, seeking excellence in all we do.
- To work in compliance with the Council’s policies on Health and Safety, Equal opportunities, Customer Care, Discipline and Grievance, and any other adopted Corporate Policies.
- To make use of the technology available to improve services and communications within the remit of the role.
- To network and support working relationships and partnerships with officers, Elected Members, businesses, visitors, and other agencies as required to fulfil the job purpose.
- To be aware of the Data Protection and Freedom of Information legislation, and, so far as is reasonably practicable, ensure compliance with the requirements of the role.
- To undertake personal development commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Main Activities (Service Related)
- To ensure proactive and effective communications systems and processes are in place to capture and promote information about the Council, and to maximise the use of communication channels, including the website, social media, Council publications, and broadcast media, including monitoring team inboxes.
- To support and be responsible for the day-to-day research, creation of content, publishing, and distribution of press releases, social media posts, video, and other content relating to events across the Borough Council, and ensure prompt and appropriate responses to all media queries received.
- When creating content, consider accessibility and differing users' needs to be able to access the content and create inclusivity.
- Maintain a master calendar for all media channels, assist in the identification of opportunities for positive news stories, and devise strategies for mitigating circumstances which have the potential to cause adverse publicity. This may include responding to comments made on social media and posting as appropriate.
- Assist the Communications and Marketing Service Manager in building and maintaining effective relationships between the Council and the media.
- Attend allocated Council meetings and civic events to liaise with the press and key stakeholders and gather content to support future marketing and news materials, some of which may be outside of normal working hours.
- Support the production of content for all Council online and offline communications channels, including researching, producing news/editorial content, and coordinating with the visual designer.
- Carry out allocated day-to-day activities, including daily website maintenance, responding to queries within deadlines, preparing and distributing press releases, and managing inboxes and social media accounts supported by the department. Picking up further allocated ad-hoc tasks where required to support service delivery.
- Provide guidance on options for media relations and use of social media channels to employees and Councillors, ensuring the use of corporate branding and appropriate themes i.e. core values.
- Ensure internal and corporate documents comply with corporate style guidelines and branding. Supporting this through updating the corporate style guidelines and branding pages.
- Actively seek out ways to improve the content created for communications, marketing, and media activity and make the best use of digital marketing resources to promote events. This will include responding to comments made on social media and posting as appropriate.
- Contribute towards devising innovative ideas for internal and external communications.
- Where necessary, provide support to neighbouring District/Borough Councils within or outside core working hours e.g. mutual support arrangements.
- Manage and publish content within the Councils web and intranet sites and moderate/update the website and intranet within guidelines.
- Assist in the development, review, and delivery of corporate strategies including internal and external communication, consultation, and media protocol. Carry out research and analysis in relation to communications and consultation as required.
- Collate analytics of media coverage, to review content creation, brand design, recognition, and visibility, evaluating coverage achieved both internally and externally.
- With the communications and marketing manager, collaborate on the team's communications planning and delivery processes.
- To provide cover for the Communication & Marketing Officer – Visual Design, ensuring familiarity of the key responsibilities to support continuity of service.
- Undertake such other duties as appropriate to the grading of the post.
