About the Role

Communications Officer

Depaul International | Hybrid | £33,366 + Benefits

You'll create engaging content, manage digital channels, support media activity, and deliver impactful campaigns that connect audiences with our mission. We're looking for a proactive communications professional with excellent writing skills, digital expertise, and a talent for turning complex issues into compelling stories.

Please note that this job opportunity is offered as a full-time (37.5 hours a week), permanent role.

Key Deliverables

Digital and Brand Strategy

  • Lead the management and ongoing development of the Depaul Group website, ensuring content remains current, strategically aligned, and reflective of the organisation’s global priorities.
  • Provide oversight and support to national members in maintaining consistent digital standards and brand coherence.
  • Strategically oversee and evolve Depaul International’s presence across social media platforms, guiding the creation of high-quality digital, video, audio, and print content that strengthens audience engagement and upholds brand integrity across all channels.
  • Direct the production and dissemination of key internal and external communications outputs, including internal newsletters, publications, and the compilation and publication of the annual Impact Report and Trustees Annual Report.
  • Maintain and oversee a strategic annual content calendar, using horizon scanning and external milestones to shape proactive, timely communications planning.

Media Relations and Storytelling

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with international, national, and sector-specific journalists to secure consistent, high-quality coverage of Depaul’s work and global homelessness issues.
  • Monitor relevant external events and opportunities, identifying those of interest to DPI and coordinating communications activity around DPI’s participation.
  • Manage Depaul International’s response to reactive media enquiries, ensuring the organisation is well-positioned to respond to external events and opportunities.
  • Source and develop impactful case studies from across the Depaul Group to support media engagement, campaigns, and digital storytelling.

Advocacy Communications

  • Work in close partnership with the Global Advocacy Lead to ensure communications strategies and outputs effectively support and amplify Depaul’s advocacy priorities across the Depaul Group, including IGH and FHA.
  • Provide leadership on aligning messaging, campaign content and public engagement tools with advocacy objectives.

Internal and Group Communications

  • Lead and coordinate DPI's internal communications across the Depaul Group, ensuring members receive timely, relevant and engaging organisational updates.
  • Support effective sharing of learning, events and opportunities across the Group, including facilitating online events and webinars

What We Are Looking For From You – Person Specification

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling, audience-appropriate content across media, digital, and internal platforms.
  • Excellent content creation skills including copywriting, visual storytelling, photography and video production/editing.
  • Strong digital skills including website management and social media channel strategy.
  • Proficiency in design and content tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software.
  • Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and collaborate across teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Skilled in horizon scanning, content planning, and delivering coordinated, multi-platform communications.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines, handle sensitive content, and respond swiftly in a fast-moving media environment.

Experience

  • Experience in a communications role, ideally within a charity, NGO, humanitarian, or advocacy-focused organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience managing media relations, including building relationships with journalists, placing stories, writing press releases/statements, and securing coverage.
  • Experience developing and executing digital and social media strategies, particularly for platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
  • Experience working across international teams in different time zones.
  • Experience of supporting advocacy through strategic communications.
  • Experience in storytelling involving people with lived experience, including conducting interviews with informed consent and safeguarding best practice.
  • Experience hosting media visits or coordinating media interviews in humanitarian or high-profile contexts.

Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of the media landscape and communications best practice, including crisis communications, reputational risk, and ethical storytelling.
  • Knowledge of global social issues, homelessness, or humanitarian work.
  • Familiarity with brand management across multiple platforms and audiences.
  • Understanding of the principles of equity, dignity and power in storytelling and communications.
  • Understanding of Vincentian values and willingness to embed these into communications work.

  • Collaborative and adaptable, with the ability to work across cultures, disciplines and stakeholder groups.

About Depaul International (DPI)

The Depaul Group – made up of 8 national charities and the Famvin Homeless Alliance and overseen by Depaul International – exists because we believe everyone deserves the dignity and security of a place to call home. We are locally governed and locally run and committed to ending homelessness and improving the lives of the people affected by it.

Depaul International (DPI) oversees the Group, ensuring the highest standards of service provision, governance, finance and helping develop capacity in areas including fundraising, communications and safeguarding. DPI currently consists of a team of 14, including the Group CEO, Business Support Manager, Director of Finance, Director of International Programmes and Partnerships, Fundraising Lead, Senior Programme Officer, Global Advocacy Lead, Head of Programme and Business Development, and Communications Officer. There is a team of three who oversee and support the Famvin Homeless Alliance (FHA), mobilising the Vincentian Family across the world to develop new housing and other projects.

Famvin Homeless Alliance (FHA) is part of Depaul International. It is a ground-breaking initiative fostering collaboration and capacity building within the Vincentian Family in the area of homelessness. Through the FHA’s flagship 13 Houses Campaign, we support established and emerging homelessness initiatives across the globe, having reached over 11,000 people in 130 projects across 79 countries. The FHA is also involved in high-level advocacy at the UN, works to develop Catholic Social Teaching around homelessness and is building a map of Vincentian homelessness services to unite Vincentians and improve their service to people who are homeless.

We are currently based in eight countries in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, (Croatia, France, Ireland, Slovakia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom. the United States of America and the Philippines), providing a range of urgent accommodation and services for people experiencing homelessness. The global programme focuses on four strategic areas: provision of homeless Services; maintaining and working by our Vincentian Values; advocating and ensuring the Voice of those we work with are heard; and maintaining global Reach in addressing homelessness.

The Group also has a key strategic relationship with the Ruff Institute of Global Homelessness (IGH), which focuses on ending homelessness globally by bridging research, policy, and practice. The strategic partnership was born out of our shared values and commitment to end homelessness and change the lives of those affected by it.
