Communications Officer - Maternity Cover
About the team
The Communications and Engagement Directorate plays a critical role in helping people understand and engage with the work of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the impact we have on public protection.
You'll join our Marketing Communications team, a collaborative team of specialists responsible for delivering campaigns, consultations, publications, events and engagement activities that reach nurses, midwives, nursing associates, employers and the wider public.
We are evolving from a reactive communications service to a more strategic, audience-focused and campaign-led function. This is an exciting time to join a team that is helping shape how the NMC engages with over 860,000 professionals on our register while supporting significant organisational transformation.
No two days are the same. One day you may be supporting a major campaign, the next you could be developing digital content, analysing audience insights, coordinating multimedia projects or helping colleagues communicate complex information in clear and engaging ways.
Your role and impact
As a Communications Officer, you'll play an important role in delivering high-quality communications that help people understand the NMC's work, priorities and services.
Working closely with Communications Managers and colleagues across the organisation, you'll support the planning, development and delivery of integrated communications activity across a range of channels and audiences.
You'll contribute to campaigns, consultations, corporate communications, digital content and publications, ensuring our communications are engaging, accessible and aligned with our organisational priorities.
In this varied role, you will:
- Support the delivery of integrated communications campaigns and engagement activity.
- Create, edit and proofread high-quality content for a range of channels and audiences.
- Develop and coordinate digital, video and multimedia communications content.
- Produce newsletters, publications and corporate communications materials.
- Work with internal stakeholders, designers, agencies and external suppliers to deliver communications projects.
- Monitor communications performance and use audience insight to improve future activity.
- Help ensure accessibility, consistency and quality across all communications outputs.
- Contribute to team projects that strengthen communications capability and continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
