About the Role
Do you believe everyone should have equal access to cancer information, support and life-saving services?
Cancer Black Care is seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Community Engagement Officer to help improve cancer awareness, reduce health inequalities and increase engagement with Black African, Black Caribbean, Black British and other ethnically diverse communities across Brent.
The role is community-facing and relationship-led. You will spend most of your time building trusted relationships with local residents, community groups, faith organisations, healthcare providers and voluntary organisations, encouraging people to access cancer information, screening, support services and early diagnosis initiatives.
You will organise and attend community events, promote healthy lifestyles, identify barriers preventing people from accessing services and help ensure that community voices influence future service development.

Key Responsibilities
Community Engagement and Outreach
- Build trusted relationships with Brent's diverse communities, including residents, community groups, faith organisations and local businesses.
- Deliver outreach activities in community venues, GP practices, libraries, workplaces, barbershops, cafés and local events to promote cancer awareness, early diagnosis, screening and healthy lifestyles.
- Identify individuals who may benefit from Cancer Black Care's services, encourage access to support and increase awareness of the organisation across Brent.
- Develop ongoing relationships with service users, encouraging participation in support groups, Coffee Mornings, workshops and other activities while identifying changing needs and providing appropriate support or signposting.
- Support the recruitment, induction and coordination of volunteers, helping to create a positive volunteering experience and opportunities for development.
Partnership Development
- Develop and maintain effective partnerships with GP practices, hospitals, social prescribing teams, local authorities, voluntary organisations and community leaders to improve access to services.
- Generate referrals into Cancer Black Care through proactive engagement and maintain referral pathways to maximise participation.
- Represent Cancer Black Care at partnership meetings, networking events and community forums.
Community Support and Service Development
- Facilitate support groups, Coffee Mornings, workshops and awareness sessions, providing basic cancer information and signposting individuals to appropriate services.
- Gather community insight, identify barriers to accessing services and report emerging trends, unmet needs and health inequalities to support service improvement.
- Promote service user involvement in shaping and evaluating Cancer Black Care's services and contribute to the development of new initiatives based on community need.
Monitoring, Reporting and Digital Engagement
- Maintain accurate records of outreach activity, referrals, attendance, outcomes and follow-up using organisational systems.
- Collect feedback, monitor performance and contribute to weekly, monthly and commissioner reports demonstrating service impact.
- Support Cancer Black Care's digital engagement through social media, online awareness campaigns and community communication channels.

What We're Looking For
Essential
- Experience working in community outreach, engagement or community development.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience building relationships with diverse communities.
- Ability to work independently and organise community activities.
- Good understanding of health inequalities and barriers affecting underserved communities.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills.
- Ability to collect and report data accurately.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Experience engaging with underserved or marginalised communities.
- Ability to build trust with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work flexibly in community settings.
- Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.
Desirable
- Experience delivering health promotion or awareness campaigns.
- Knowledge of Brent communities and local organisations.
- Experience working within the voluntary, community or health sector.
- Understanding of cancer awareness, prevention or long-term health conditions.
- Experience organising community events and workshops.
- Experience supporting volunteers.
- Knowledge of NHS and voluntary sector referral pathways.
- Experience working with people affected by cancer or other long-term conditions.
What You'll Be Doing Day to Day
No two days are the same. One day you might be delivering a cancer awareness session in a community centre, the next meeting with a GP practice, attending a local event, supporting a Coffee Morning or developing new partnerships across Brent.
