Job Description

Role Overview

The community highways team serves as the primary point of contact for all stakeholders, including the public, Parish/Town Councils, and elected members, when reporting defects or other highway-related issues.

  • Conducting regular highway inspections to record safety defects and identify maintenance issues.
  • Engaging with residents and landowners on enforcement issues impacting the highway and public safety.
  • Assessing and approving licence applications for activities requiring a permit on the highway.
  • Managing small capital budgets to resolve local issues like minor traffic management, small drainage repairs, and installing pedestrian dropped crossing points.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical advice and support to colleagues and customers.
  • Ensure the highway is safe and available for public use.
  • Attend meetings with local councillors and residents on highway-related issues.
  • Fulfill duties under the 1980 Highways Act.
  • Conduct inspections on the public highway to meet deadlines.
  • Represent the council in court when required.
  • Assess and grant some highway licensing.
  • Liaise with Town and Parish Councils on highway matters.
  • Manage PC, handheld communication devices, and specialized technical equipment.
  • Represent the council in highway matters while ensuring customer viewpoints and concerns are understood by stakeholders.
  • Work as part of a team, offering advice, guidance, and detailed assessments for complex issues.
  • Undertake public consultation and liaise with local communities.

  • Ability to work within a team environment and advise others.
