We're Revolutionising Local News

Firefly runs more than 130 local magazines on our own platform, growing fast, and the people of each town write the news themselves: residents, schools, clubs, businesses, councils. We're hiring the person who leads that on the ground across the North East, Cumbria, the North West and the West Midlands. You'll run a small, sharp team, open doors in every town, and make the results visible every week. You'll work directly with the founder and CEO and alongside our partnerships and editorial leads: a senior role with real room to grow.

Where

Home-based, travelling across four regions. Travel and expenses paid, mileage at 45p a mile.

Hours

About 20 days a month, flexible, including some evenings and weekends for events, agreed in advance.

Pay

£28,000 to £34,000 a year, depending on your experience and what you bring. That's about £2,330 to £2,830 a month for the length of the contract, plus 28 days' holiday a year pro rata (including bank holidays) and a workplace pension.

Contract

Fixed-term employed, 1 November 2026 to 19 March 2027 (start date by agreement).

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You'll Do

Lead two community outreach officers and work with our editors day to day

  • Sit at the top table with the founder and CEO, our partnerships managers and editorial leads, and help shape where we go next
  • Open doors: schools, clubs, councils, charities and businesses, and get them publishing
  • Plan and run the sessions and events that turn a town into contributors
  • Front the team's updates, team calls and social posts: the face of local news in our regions
  • Keep the team organised and the numbers moving

You

Have led people, projects or programmes and can show what happened

  • Are organised and confident with anyone, from a head teacher to a council leader
  • Want to be part of reinventing local media, not maintaining it
  • Ideally hold a driving licence and have access to a vehicle; tell us if you would travel another way

Closes Wednesday 21 October 2026. We review applications as they arrive and may interview before then, so apply early. We reply to everyone within a week of the closing date.

Offers are conditional on references, right-to-work checks and, where the role needs one, a DBS check. We recruit on skills and potential. Age, background and route into work do not matter to us. Firefly welcomes applications from everyone, especially people from communities under-represented in local news. If you need any adjustments to apply or interview, tell us. You must have the right to work in the UK; we are unable to sponsor visas. We keep applications for nine months after the closing date, then delete them, unless you ask us to keep yours for future roles. Full notice: fireflynewmedia.com/jobs/privacy.
