The post holder will promote and support the health and wellbeing of all school-aged children, their families and the wider community.
The post holder will be expected to carry out assessments of needs with school-aged children, young people and their families. The post holder will also work on the implementation of planned programmes of care delegated by the School Nurse specialist practitioner.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Contribute to the identification and protection of children at risk of abuse and act in accordance with the local Safeguarding Children’s Board guidelines.
- Attend safeguarding and other meetings to improve the health outcomes of children and young people as directed by the School Nurse Specialist Practitioner and provide written reports.
- Assess and undertake selective health care interventions as directed by the School Nurse specialist practitioner, refer to other agencies/Health Care professionals as necessary.
- Provide professional support and advice to children, young people, their families and schools and liaise and refer in discussion with the School Nurse Specialist practitioner.

Service Delivery Responsibilities
- Support delivery of the 5 -19 Healthy Child Programme (DoH 2009) and National Childhood Measurement programme under the direction of the School Nurse Specialist practitioner.
- Support the planning, assessment of need and delivery of the agreed provision of a school health service to each school under the direction of the School Nurse Specialist practitioner.
- Work within the Nursing & Midwifery Council’s (NMC) framework for practice. All community staff nurse should have knowledge and work in accordance with Trust policies and guidelines including clinical supervision.
- Actively promote uptake of all school nurse contacts, and public health interventions, screening and immunisations/vaccinations.
