Help people build confidence and develop the skills they need for everyday life
At Adult Community Learning (ACL), we believe learning has the power to transform lives, build confidence and create new opportunities.
We're looking for a passionate and engaging Community Trainer to deliver inclusive and accessible learning opportunities that help adults develop skills, improve confidence and wellbeing, and progress into further learning, employment or greater involvement within their local communities.
Whether you're an experienced tutor, trainer, community educator or outreach practitioner, we'd love to hear from you.
As part of Essex County Council, ACL is the largest provider of adult learning in Essex, supporting thousands of learners each year to gain skills, improve wellbeing and achieve positive outcomes. Many of our learners are taking their first steps back into learning and may face barriers to participation, so you'll play a key role in creating welcoming, supportive and learner-centred experiences.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll support adults across Essex to build confidence, develop new skills and engage in learning through a broad range of community-based programmes.
You will:
- Plan, deliver and assess high-quality community learning sessions tailored to learner needs and community priorities.
- Deliver a range of entry-level and community learning programmes, including English, maths, digital skills, employability and wellbeing courses.
- Embed English, maths and digital skills within learning programmes where appropriate.
- Support learners to develop confidence, wellbeing and progression through creative and flexible learning approaches.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners, including those with additional support needs.
- Use assessment and learner reviews to monitor progress and celebrate learner achievement.
- Work collaboratively with community partners to engage new learners and support participation in learning opportunities.
- Attend community events and outreach activities to promote ACL courses and engage with local residents.
- Promote safeguarding, Prevent, British Values, equality, diversity and inclusion in all delivery environments.
- Collaborate with the Community Engagement Officer and Sector Lead to support learner recruitment, engagement and progression.
- Contribute to curriculum planning, quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Participate in continuous professional development and reflective practice to maintain effective and current teaching skills.
We're looking for someone who:
- Is passionate about helping people build confidence and develop new skills.
- Has experience of delivering learning, training or support to adults in community, outreach or educational settings.
- Understands the challenges some adults face when accessing learning and can create supportive and inclusive environments.
- Can build positive relationships with learners, community groups and partner organisations.
- Is confident engaging with local communities and representing ACL at outreach and promotional events.
- Has excellent organisational, communication and relationship-building skills.
- Is adaptable, approachable and learner-focused.
- Is committed to widening participation and helping people achieve positive outcomes through learning.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
