About The Role

The Company Accountant will play a key finance role within the business, taking ownership of the finance function, ensuring accurate, timely and reliable financial information is available to support effective business decision-making. The Company Accountant will be responsible for management accounts, statutory reporting, audit preparation, payroll, cashflow management, budgeting, internal controls and financial planning. Working closely with senior management and departmental leads, to provide clear financial insight, strengthen reporting processes and support the continued growth and operational performance of the business.

Key Duties and Responsibilities Include

  • Lead the day-to-day finance and accounting function, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial operations across the business.
  • Provide clear financial insight, analysis and recommendations to support senior management decision-making, business planning and operational performance.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, complete month-end close processes and present financial results in a clear and meaningful way.
  • Develop and improve management reporting, including key performance indicators, dashboards and financial information that supports effective operational management.
  • Manage cashflow, forecasting and working capital requirements, maintaining regular communication with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare, review and monitor budgets, working with departmental leads to support accurate forecasting, cost control and financial accountability.
  • Maintain robust internal controls, financial procedures and reporting processes to support compliance, good governance and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee year-end accounts (UK GAAP), statutory audit preparation, payroll requirements, tax reporting and compliance with relevant accounting standards and legislation, including preparing an annual Research & Development report.
  • Ensure all financial transactions, records, reports and supporting documentation are accurate, complete, confidential and retained in line with company, audit and statutory requirements.
  • Complete quarterly VAT returns including calculations for Second Hand Margin Scheme and Second Hand Margin Vehicle Payment Scheme.
  • Evaluate capital expenditure, investment proposals and project financing, providing commercially sound guidance and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the company’s financial strategy, supporting sustainable growth, improved processes and delivery of key operational and commercial targets.
  • Lead, support and develop the finance team, promoting high standards, accountability, training, collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure Health, Safety and Wellbeing processes and procedures are followed to safeguard yourself, colleagues and the wider team.
  • Advise and demonstrate a good understanding of the movement of goods between GB, NI & ROI, including knowledge of TSS.
  • Oversee the process of stock take on a monthly and annual basis working with the relevant departments to ensure a high level of stock accuracy.
  • Participate in mandatory, role-specific and professional development training as required.
  • Carry out any other duties consistent with the nature, level and responsibilities of the role, as reasonably required to support the needs of the organisation.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be an organised, commercially aware and proactive finance professional with strong communication, leadership and analytical skills. They will have excellent attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced environment. Confident using accounting systems and Microsoft Office 365, they will be able to translate financial information into practical insight for operational and senior management teams.

Essential Criteria

  • Professional accountancy qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years post qualification experience in a finance or practice environment, including experience preparing management accounts and supporting financial reporting.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with senior management, operational teams, auditors and other stakeholders.
  • Experience preparing monthly management accounts, completing month-end processes and presenting financial information clearly to support business decisions.
  • Experience supporting year-end accounts, statutory audit preparation, payroll compliance and tax-related reporting requirements.
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office 365, advanced Excel capability and practical experience using accounting systems such as Xero or similar finance software.
  • Organised, proactive, detail-focused and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous finance experience within engineering, manufacturing, automotive, mobility, distribution or another operational business environment.
  • Experience supporting finance apprentices through their studies and qualifications.
  • Previous experience with Research and Development reporting and claim preparation.
  • Experience implementing process improvements, strengthening internal controls or developing financial reporting dashboards.
  • Experience supporting financial planning, business growth, systems development or change projects within a growing organisation.

What We Offer

  • Salary: negotiable depending on experience.
  • Immediate start available.
  • Hours of Work: 39 hours, Monday to Thursday 9:00am - 5:30pm and Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm.
  • Benenden Health available after successful completion of the 6-month probation period.
