ABOUT JSM
At JSM Group, we are a leading specialist infrastructure engineering company. We design and install the complex power networks, digital infrastructure and specialist systems a future-focused worldwide marketplace needs — from high-power grid connections to critical utilities, data centres to renewable energy.
From High-Power grid connections to Critical Utilities. Data Centres to Renewable Energy, our full turnkey solution teams manage the full scope to help advise and deliver complex infrastructure projects at speed, on time and with reduced legislation, technical and commercial risks.
ABOUT THE TEAM
You'll join our People and Culture team, reporting to the Chief People Officer, and own reward decisions across the whole organisation — using JSM's job architecture, job families, career pathways and grading as your foundation.
Day to day, you'll work closely with People Operations on data and systems, Finance on reward budgeting and forecasting, and line managers across our engineering, infrastructure and construction business who come to you with pay, offer and grading queries.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Compensation & Benefits Manager, you'll own how JSM rewards its people across all locations, from pay structures and job grading through to benefits design and pay review governance. Reporting to our Chief People Officer, you'll make sure reward decisions across our organisation are fair, market-competitive and consistent, using JSM's job architecture, job families, career pathways and grading as your foundation.
Day to day, you will:
Pay, Grading & Job Architecture
- Own the day-to-day application of JSM's job architecture, evaluating new and changed roles against the Job Family, Career Pathway and Grade framework, and recommending grading outcomes to the CPO
- Review job profile assignment requests (new hire and promotion) coming through the approval process, checking grading consistency before they're entered into HiBob
- Design and maintain JSM's salary structures and pay ranges, benchmarking roles against relevant market data for the engineering, infrastructure and construction sectors
- Lead job evaluation exercises for new or significantly changed roles, working with People and Culture colleagues and line managers
Reward Cycles & Governance
- Plan and run the annual pay review and bonus/incentive cycle end-to-end, including budget modelling, manager guidance and system updates
- Prepare gender pay gap reporting, equal pay audits and other statutory reward reporting, flagging risks and recommending corrective action
- Maintain reward policies and governance documentation, keeping them aligned to employment law and JSM's Great Place to Work commitments
Benefits
- Own JSM's employee benefits offering — pension, health and wellbeing, and lifestyle benefits — including provider relationships, renewals and procurement
- Review and refresh the benefits package periodically to keep it competitive, cost-effective and genuinely valued by employees
- Lead clear, accessible communication of pay and benefits to employees and managers

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Data, Systems & Compliance
- Maintain the accuracy and integrity of compensation data in HiBob, partnering with People Operations on data quality
- Produce reward MI and analytics for the CPO and senior leadership — pay ratios, cost of reward, benchmarking insight and pay review outcomes
- Ensure pay practices comply with National Minimum/Living Wage, Equal Pay Act and other relevant location-specific employment legislation
Advisory & Stakeholder Management
- Advise line managers and people team colleagues on pay decisions, offers and grading queries
- Partner with Finance on reward budgeting and forecasting
- Act as JSM's internal subject matter expert on compensation and benefits, supporting wider People and Culture projects as needed
This is a part-time role (21 hours a week), based at our Head Office in Potters Bar, built around real flexibility for how you structure your working pattern, with full ownership of JSM's reward agenda.
ABOUT YOU
You'll do well here if you recognise yourself in this:
- You're hungry to grow and you take personal responsibility for your work and your development.
- You're comfortable with complexity and you'd rather solve a hard technical problem than avoid it.
- You work well across disciplines — you know good delivery depends on civil, power and digital teams pulling in the same direction.
- You use sound judgment under pressure and you're straight with people about risk and programme.
- You can manage the structure and pace of a pay review or bonus cycle independently, and you're comfortable owning JSM's reward agenda within a part-time working pattern.
How you'll show up
We assess success in this role against JSM's five behaviours:
- Technical Excellence & Problem Solving — You bring rigour to job evaluation and pay analysis, spotting anomalies and building reward models people trust.
- Communication & Collaboration — You translate technical reward concepts into plain language for managers and employees, and work closely with People Operations, Finance and business leaders.
- Delivery & Accountability — You own the pay review and bonus cycle end-to-end, hitting deadlines and keeping governance tight.
- Leadership & People Development — You guide managers to make fair, consistent reward decisions, and help build reward capability across the People and Culture team.
- Commercial Awareness — You understand the cost and budget impact of every reward decision, balancing competitiveness with commercial reality.
EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Proven experience in a compensation & benefits, reward, or job evaluation role
- Hands-on experience with a job evaluation methodology (e.g. Hay, Mercer, Willis Towers Watson, or an equivalent framework), and running market benchmarking exercises
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills, comfortable building and interpreting pay models and reward MI
- Working knowledge of UK employment law as it relates to pay, equal pay, National Minimum/Living Wage, and gender pay gap reporting
- Experience using an HRIS (HiBob or equivalent) to manage compensation data
- Strong stakeholder management skills, able to explain reward decisions clearly to managers and employees at all levels
