London

A leading City law firm is looking to hire a Competition Lawyer at 2-6 PQE to join its highly regarded London practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for an associate seeking a genuinely broad competition role within a close-knit and collaborative team. The successful candidate will work closely with partners and senior lawyers across a varied caseload, with meaningful responsibility, direct client exposure and strong opportunities for development.

The practice advises on a wide range of UK, EU and multi-jurisdictional competition matters. The work spans merger control, foreign investment, regulatory investigations and competition litigation, allowing associates to develop a broad practice rather than becoming too narrowly specialised.

The Role

The successful candidate will advise clients on a mix of contentious and non-contentious competition matters, including:

  • UK and EU merger control
  • Multi-jurisdictional merger filings
  • Foreign direct investment and national security matters
  • Competition investigations
  • Competition litigation and related disputes
  • Competition aspects of corporate and private equity transactions
  • Strategic competition advice

Merger control will form an important part of the position, so candidates should have some previous experience in this area. However, the role offers considerable variety, with opportunities to work across investigations, litigation and foreign investment matters alongside transactional competition work.

Associates are encouraged to take ownership of matters and develop strong client relationships. The structure of the team means the successful candidate will work closely with partners and gain exposure to the full lifecycle of matters, including strategy, drafting, client management and interaction with the relevant authorities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Team

The competition practice offers a collegiate and supportive environment. It is a close-knit group in which partners are accessible and associates are given the opportunity to contribute meaningfully from an early stage.

The team handles sophisticated and demanding matters while maintaining a collaborative and approachable culture. Associates receive plenty of support but are also encouraged to step forward, take responsibility and build their own profile with clients.

This is an attractive opportunity for an associate seeking high-quality, complex work alongside greater variety, partner access and responsibility within a close-knit team. The practice is continuing to develop, creating opportunities for associates to broaden their experience and take on increasing responsibility as they progress.

Candidate Profile

The firm is interested in speaking with competition lawyers at approximately 2-6 PQE. Candidates around the mid-level are likely to be particularly well suited, although there is flexibility across the advertised range.

  • Experience advising on competition law matters within a recognised law firm or competition practice
  • Some UK or EU merger-control experience
  • An interest in developing broader experience across foreign investment, investigations and competition litigation
  • Strong drafting and analytical skills
  • The confidence to engage directly with clients and contribute to strategic discussions
  • A collaborative, commercially minded and personable approach

UK-qualified lawyers are encouraged to apply, although candidates with relevant experience from Brussels or other European competition practices will also be considered. The firm is open to lawyers from a range of backgrounds, provided they can demonstrate strong technical ability and relevant merger-control experience.

The team places considerable importance on personality and fit. It is looking for someone who is well rounded, enjoys working collaboratively and is keen to become an active member of the practice.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

Key attractions include:

  • A broad mix of competition work
  • Exposure to UK, EU and multi-jurisdictional matters
  • Experience across merger control, investigations, litigation and foreign investment
  • Direct client contact and opportunities to develop trusted relationships
