Referment is working with a global options market maker that provides liquidity across equity, fixed income, commodity and FX derivatives markets. The firm combines proprietary trading technology with a flat, collaborative culture, and this role sits in a small, high-performing compliance team with significant individual responsibility.

The Role

You will be the firm's primary trade surveillance specialist within Compliance, overseeing the surveillance framework end to end: reviewing and enhancing its methodology and procedures, performing monthly risk-based quality assurance on alerts, investigating escalated matters through to a reasoned STOR or no-STOR recommendation, and leading the annual Market Abuse Risk Assessment review and the annual review of surveillance alert parameters. You will work closely with Middle Office to ensure alerts are generated, reviewed and closed appropriately, act as the primary Compliance contact for surveillance-related issues, and ensure new markets, instruments and trading venues are incorporated into the framework as the firm's trading activity develops.

Alongside surveillance, you will own a broad range of compliance responsibilities across the group: managing the Compliance inbox, owning day-to-day personal account dealing controls, handling KYC-related requests, executing the Compliance Monitoring Programme, coordinating inductions and the annual training programme, managing the operational aspects of the annual SM&CR attestation process, overseeing routine compliance reporting and submissions, and handling routine regulatory enquiries across the firm's regulators and jurisdictions internationally. A key expectation is improving how compliance operates: reviewing processes critically, contributing to the firm's compliance automation and modernisation programme, and owning process-improvement initiatives through to implementation, with an interest in AI and new technology.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What We're Looking For

  • At least 4-5 years' relevant compliance experience within a trading firm, market maker, investment firm or another regulated financial services environment
  • Practical trade surveillance experience, including reviewing or overseeing surveillance arrangements and a good understanding of market-abuse risks and surveillance methodologies
  • Hands-on experience of surveillance processes: alert review, quality assurance, alert scenarios or parameters, procedures and escalation handling
  • A good working knowledge of the UK market abuse regime, including UK MAR and the FCA's expectations on market conduct and surveillance
  • The ability to operate independently within a compliance function, exercise sound judgment across multiple jurisdictions, and give practical compliance advice clearly to traders and other stakeholders
  • Educated to degree level, preferably in law, finance, economics or a related discipline; an ICA certificate or diploma (or equivalent) is useful

Relevant Desirable Experience

  • Contributing to a trade surveillance system implementation, migration or significant system change
  • Conducting a Market Abuse Risk Assessment or reviewing surveillance coverage against market-abuse typologies
  • Investigating surveillance escalations and preparing STOR recommendations; communications or other market-conduct monitoring
  • Exposure to derivatives, proprietary trading and/or market-making activity; multi-jurisdiction regulatory experience
  • Familiarity with MiFID/MIFIDPRU and SM&CR; using automation, workflow or AI tools to improve compliance processes

This could suit a compliance professional from a trading or market-making background who wants greater ownership of their work — someone comfortable asking questions, solving problems and improving how things are done, not simply following an existing process.
