Compliance Manager – Head of AML & GDPR (Lettings & Property)

Dwelly — a UK-based, AI-enabled lettings and property management platform — is driving growth through a roll-up strategy, acquiring estate agencies to expand its highly sticky, recurring revenue landlord portfolios. The company combines two core arms:
- Acquiring existing letting agencies, leveraging their established client bases for steady revenue.
- Building high-performance technology to automate tenant management, payments, and post-rental property maintenance, seamlessly integrating AI to streamline brick-and-mortar real estate operations. This transformation typically occurs within two months, enhancing user experiences and operational efficiency.

Position Summary
We seek an experienced compliance professional to lead and manage day-to-day compliance workstreams under the direction of the General Counsel. This pivotal role requires expertise across anti-money laundering (AML/CTF), data protection (GDPR), regulatory lettings/estate agency compliance, and training. The ideal candidate builds frameworks from the ground up, embeds a strong compliance culture, and collaborates closely with senior leadership, operations, product, and regulations teams to ensure efficient adherence to evolving legal landscapes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting AML regulations as the firm’s Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO), overseeing:
- Customer due diligence (CDD)
- Risk assessments
- Sanctions screening
- Suspicious activity reporting to the NCA (National Crime Agency)
- HMRC registration for the business
- Serving as the Data Protection Officer (DPO), ensuring UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 compliance via:
- Data mapping and records of processing
- Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
- Handling subject access requests (SARs) / data subject requests
- Breach response protocols
- Direct interface with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO)
- Ensuring adherence to lettings and estate agency regulations, including:
- Client money protection obligations
- Redress scheme membership
- Fee transparency requirements
- Property standards compliance
- Tenancy-related obligations
- Designing and delivering a firm-wide compliance training programme, covering:
- AML procedures
- Data protection principles
- Conduct standards
- Sector-specific lettings compliance
- Embedding compliance culture during acquisitions, assisting with:
- Diligence on target agencies
- Identifying regulatory gaps
- Integration onto Dwelly’s compliance framework
- Drafting and maintaining policy documents, controls, and registers
- Monitoring regulatory horizon-scanning for:
- Evolving legal/regulatory changes impacting lettings, AML, and AI applications

Requirements & Preferred Background
Must-Have:
✔ A proven track record in compliance within a regulated business (sufficient experience to fulfill MLRO and DPO roles) ✔ A expert knowledge of UK AML/Money Laundering Regulations 2017, with hands-on MLRO experience ✔ Robust UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 expertise, adequate to act as DPO ✔ Flair for commercial collaboration, positioning compliance as a strategic asset rather than a compliance gatekeeper

- Client money protection
- Redress scheme requirements
- Fee transparency and property standards 👉 Experience designing and implementing compliance training 👉 Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., ICA, ACAMS, data protection certifications) 👉 Background in tech/start-ups or scaling businesses
Nice-To-Have:
