Blue Umi is building underwater data centres.
We currently operate a live submerged prototype running AI workloads at a UK marina, and we're now preparing for the next stage: deploying high-density AI infrastructure at much larger scale.
You can see more about what we're building at blue-umi.com.
Our existing team comes from subsea and marine engineering. We're looking for someone from the other side of the problem to lead the compute infrastructure side of Blue Umi as we prepare for our Seed round and scale-up.
The role
You would join Blue Umi's core leadership team as the third person taking the company through its Seed round and into scale-up, with substantial ownership of the compute side of the business.
You would lead how modern AI/HPC infrastructure is specified, deployed and operated within Blue Umi, and help translate operator requirements into the systems we're building.
In practice, that is likely to include:
- owning the technical interface between Blue Umi's physical infrastructure and the AI/HPC systems deployed inside it;
- defining requirements around high-density GPU racks, power, cooling, networking, monitoring, serviceability and deployment;
- helping shape relationships with GPU clouds, hyperscalers, AI infrastructure operators, OEMs and hardware partners;
- bringing operator-side judgement into the design of our next demonstrator and subsequent commercial deployments;
- challenging our assumptions about what compute customers actually need from an underwater data-centre platform;
- helping build Blue Umi's compute capability and team as the company scales.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Who we're looking for
The strongest signal is real experience operating or deploying AI/HPC infrastructure. That could come from a GPU cloud/neocloud, hyperscaler, HPC operator, systems integrator, OEM or another environment running serious high-density compute.
Experience with areas such as GPU clusters, Linux infrastructure, workload orchestration (e.g. Slurm or Kubernetes), high-performance networking (e.g. InfiniBand or RoCE), NVIDIA platforms, cluster deployment or capacity planning would all be relevant. You do not need to cover every one of these.
We're particularly interested in people who can move comfortably between deep technical detail and the bigger infrastructure and commercial picture. With a small team and ambitious scale-up ahead, judgement, curiosity, ownership and the ability to operate with ambiguity matter more to us than a particular job title or number of years' experience.
Location
Hybrid. We currently work across Bristol and London and are flexible on where in the UK the right person is based. Regular in-person work with the team and at deployment sites will be part of the role.

Timing and package
This is intended to become a full-time leadership role. We are currently preparing to launch our Seed round later this year, and expect the full-time role and salary to commence once that financing closes.
Expected post-Seed salary: £75,000–£95,000, depending on experience and scope, plus meaningful equity, with flexibility for an exceptional candidate.
We're beginning the search now because we'd like the right person to have the opportunity to shape that next phase rather than arriving after the major compute decisions have already been made. Where there is a strong mutual fit, we're open to agreeing an earlier part-time, advisory or consulting arrangement. We would not expect someone to leave a secure role before the financing is in place.
Hiring process
Applications will first be reviewed based on relevant experience and background.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to speak with the Blue Umi team. We're interested in how you think, what you've actually built or operated, and what you would bring to Blue Umi.
If the role sounds interesting but your background doesn't match every point above, we'd still like to hear from you.
Applicant information will be used only for Blue Umi's recruitment process and shared only with those involved in hiring.
