There are three positions available from August/September. They are at the Departments of Chemistry and Earth Sciences and the Faculty of Mathematics. The exact start dates will be by negotiation.
The Department of Earth Sciences is the top Earth Science department in the 2016 Complete University Guide for the UK, in international league tables we are consistently listed in the top five. The role of IT is central to much of the research carried out in the department, this includes developing sophisticated computer models of how the Earth works and interrogating large datasets produced from instrumentation in our labs.
The Faculty of Mathematics is one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in mathematics. Our researchers work across pure and applied mathematics, statistics and theoretical physics. Their work ranges from exploring number theory and the origins of the universe to improving healthcare and understanding climate change. Computers and IT are essential to much of this research. They allow researchers to create mathematical models and simulations, develop specialist software, use machine learning and analyse large amounts of data.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
