About the Role
Our world-leading Laboratory is seeking an experienced Principal Scientist to lead our work in the field of trustworthy AI, with a focus on large language models (LLMs) and AI agents.
You will lead a team of data and AI scientists, expand capabilities within the department, prepare technical proposals and help define our strategic priorities, whilst engaging with stakeholders across government, industry and academia. You will collaborate with scientists and engineers from across NPL and externally to solve problems. You will mentor and develop early career staff to build capability to meet future needs.
You will develop detailed technical knowledge in trustworthy AI, including general aspects of risk and quality management, testing and assessment of machine learning algorithms, evaluation of LLMs and AI agents, computer vision methods, and the generation and manipulation of synthetic or simulated data for benchmarking. You will also lead the application of machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision methods to a wide range of measurement problems, working collaboratively with scientists across NPL and externally.
We work in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work life balance - if you are looking for full time, part time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where possible. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and business needs.
About You
We believe that diversity and unique perspectives are key to the success of our science and engineering projects. For this role, we particularly encourage applications from candidates underrepresented in STEM disciplines, in particular women, disabled, black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates, as well as Armed Forces service leavers looking to transition into the civilian workforce.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
