Conference Technician

The NEC Group is looking for talented and passionate individuals to join our dynamic team. Our mission is to create unforgettable experiences through world-class events and services.

We have a fantastic opening for a Conference Technician to join our Conventions team in technical. You’ll be working across our two convention centres, at the ICC in Birmingham City Centre and Vox on the NEC Campus in Solihull. These venues provide conference and meeting space for up to 8,000 delegates, welcoming over 350,000 delegates every year! And you’ll be part of a first-class team that is renowned for delivering incredible events.

About The Role

This role provides technical expertise across all event production disciplines, ensuring the highest standards of service delivery from both staff and equipment during get-ins, event set-ups, live operations and get-outs. The postholder will also operate events as required alongside the wider technical team.

While the role requires a broad technical capability across all disciplines, we are seeking an individual with a strong staging background who can act as the department's subject matter expert in staging and exhibition delivery.

Day to day you will be responsible for

  • Delivering events in line with client requirements and Production/Event Manager instructions.
  • Working independently to ensure successful event delivery.
  • Maintaining expertise in staging and exhibition management, providing specialist technical support.
  • Identifying new technologies and improved ways of working to enhance delivery, resources and team capability.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, procedures and records.
  • Planning and carrying out staging-related maintenance, equipment testing, storage and housekeeping.
  • Supervising, supporting and promoting safe working practices for staff and freelancers.
  • Participating in training and development to continually enhance skills and service delivery.
  • Managing staging operations, including rigging, truss and hoist systems, set builds and exhibition installations.
  • Rigging and operating conference technical setups, including microphones, AV equipment and presentation systems.

About You

Our Ideal Candidate will have the following skills and experience

  • Significant experience in stage and exhibition management within live event delivery.
  • Customer-focused with a proactive, can-do approach.
  • Positive attitude and collaborative working style.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Able to make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a creative approach to resource management.
  • Ability to operate mobile access equipment.
  • IOSH qualification desirable, with knowledge of CDM Regulations, LOLER and PUWER.
