Hull City Council is seeking an enthusiastic Construction Support Technician Apprentice to join our Housing Investment team and provide vital support to our project surveyors.
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
This programme provides a structured introduction to working for a local authority. Based in the Asset Management team, the role will involve:
- Conducting property condition inspections in accordance with the Decent Home Standard, the Housing Health and Safety Rating System, and assessing instances/extent of damp and mould according to Awaabs Law guidance, policies, and procedures.
- Ensuring your health and safety during property inspections and identifying relevant repairs to ensure our tenants' homes do not fall into disrepair.
You will also have the opportunity to work alongside other Housing Investment teams, to gain a wider understanding of Housing Investment as a whole, for example, repairs and void teams and those carrying out planned improvements.
You will be expected to transport yourself throughout the city to undertake site inspections.
Duties include:
- Accompany experienced surveyors on supervised property inspections
- Using handheld equipment for the purpose of capturing component data and photographs
- Record factual information about buildings and their condition
- Assist with measurements and basic data capture
- Identify and submit repairs on behalf of tenants
- Transfer approved inspection notes into report templates
- Draft factual report sections under supervision
- Check reports for spelling, grammar, formatting, and consistency
- Carry out property-related desktop research
- Upload and organise inspection records and supporting documents
- Build strong working relationships with contractors
- Follow health and safety procedures during property visits
- Complete general surveying and administrative tasks as instructed
- Undertake mandatory training to meet local authority and legislative requirements

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Apply and integrate appropriate mathematical and technical knowledge in the completion of built environment site and/or office processes to contribute to the coordination of construction projects.
- Comply with health and safety regulations and procedures. Identify and document risks and hazards. Apply statutory and company environmental and safe working practices. Produce construction project risk assessment and method statements.
- Communicate verbally to internal and external stakeholders using a range of techniques in line with company policies.
- Interpret and abstract contract documentation to develop site solutions.
- Apply digital construction processes to produce resource lists from tender and contract documentation.
- The use of project tendering, measurement and costing systems to assist with the planning of schedules of work and to provide early warning of problems for all contract phases on site.
- Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with management requirements, assessing tasks, scheduling work, achieving deadlines, reviewing performance, and keeping records of work undertaken.
- Apply sustainable principles and low carbon processes in order to implement site environmental solutions.
- Use information technology. For example, for document creation, communication, and information management. Comply with GDPR and cyber security.
- Plan and undertake continued professional development (CPD) to maintain and enhance competence in their own area of practice.
- Communicate in written form to internal and external stakeholders using a range of techniques and reporting mechanisms in line with company policies, using construction and built environment terminology.
Training schedule
You’ll gain valuable insight into how projects are priced, planned, and delivered, while working towards a Level 3 Construction Support Technician Apprenticeship and a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

The Housing Investment Service
The Housing Investment Service is responsible for the management and delivery of responsive and cyclical maintenance, planned improvement works, and refurbishment schemes to a stock of 24,000 domestic properties, garages, and associated buildings and surroundings. As a social landlord, we are particularly focused on providing a tenant-led service, based on individual needs to support persons living in our homes. The service is structured around key delivery areas, with teams responsible for Responsive Repairs, Voids, Gas Servicing & Repairs, Electrical, Planned Improvements, Asbestos, H&S, Asset Management, Finance, Customer Engagement, Contract Support, Home Ownership, and Claims. All teams work closely together to provide a uniform and consistent service for all our customers and stakeholders. The Service is responsible for an annual revenue maintenance budget of c£27m and an annual capital improvement programme in excess of c£55m, both of which aim to actively keep properties in good repair and reduce disrepair, fire safety risks, repairs, and disruption for our customers, whilst ensuring ongoing compliance with all relevant building, fire, gas, and landlord regulations and associated legislation.
