An exciting opportunity for you to join our inspiring team at Nova Training

As a Construction Tutor Trainee within our Birmingham (stechford) Centre as a Construction Trainee Tutor, you will be trained to ensure the learners gain high-quality vocational skills and accreditation preparing them for the workplace and world of work.

What you'll do at work

  • Plan individual learning to meet learner needs and ensure lesson plans and resources are prepared prior to learners attending
  • Creating conditions in the Training Centre which will help develop the abilities, skills and confidence of each learner.
  • Monitor, review and assess learners on a regular basis to meet the requirements of awarding and funding bodies and ensure learners are making expected progress.
  • Ensure learners are involved in the decision-making progress, either as individuals or in groups through learner forums.
  • Develop training and embed support, advice and guidance and punctuality and take appropriate action where attendance falls below minimum levels.
  • Teamwork is a vital aspect of the success of Nova as an organisation and all members of staff are expected to take an active part in team meetings and be involved in general development of the vocational learning offer.
  • Undertake any other duties as specified by the Line Manager.

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Integrate subject and pedagogic research into teaching activity to enhance teaching and support changes of practice
  • Identify, consider and take steps to minimise the impact of barriers to learning
  • Contextualise English and mathematics in a way that promotes understanding of key topics
  • Use a variety of teaching and assessment methods depending on the learning environment and learners’ needs
  • Encourage learners to set challenging goals
  • Promote understanding of equality and diversity and sustainable development
  • Demonstrate through their teaching the wider context (policy, economic, societal, technological, legal, cultural and environmental) of the subject, recognising the implications for professional practice
  • Design and use resources that are inclusive and add value to learners’ development
  • Engage and inspire all learners
  • Identify and set outcomes to enable each learner to achieve or exceed targets
  • Provide ongoing learner feedback
  • Use the results of initial and diagnostic assessment to plan learning and differentiated support at the start of and throughout the learners' journey
  • Encourage learners to develop: autonomy and resilience, personal and interpersonal effectiveness, social awareness and respect for others, essential employability skills, a solutions mindset, and the ability to create change
  • Use assessment data to regularly review and develop own and others’ practice and to report emerging gaps in progression and achievement amongst groups of learners
  • Support the implementation and execution of safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of children, young people and/or adults in accordance with statutory provisions
  • Prepare learners for their transition through education, further training, and into employment
  • Comply with internal and external regulations, legislation and guidance, such as: teaching, learning and assessment, recording, storing and sharing information relating to learners
  • Adapt communication style, method, and terminology to reflect the needs of the audience including individual learners, colleagues, stakeholders
  • Engage learners to establish standards of behaviour, mutual respect and safe working
  • Challenge learners to address inappropriate behaviour or viewpoints
  • Continually update and maintain their own knowledge and skills as a teaching professional and a subject specialist as part of managing their own continual professional development (CPD)
  • Be proactive in seeking and responding to feedback from varied sources including learner voice, peers, colleagues, employers and stakeholders to improve own practice
  • Manage workload through preparation and prioritisation, time management, and responsiveness to change
  • Act within, the statutory frameworks which set out their professional duties and responsibilities
  • Use innovative and up to date digital and online technologies in a way that is safe to improve teaching, learning and assessment

Training schedule

  • You will achieve a Level 5 Teaching qualification
  • Off-the-job training will follow the time allocations outlined in the Occupational Standard

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • Maths and English (grade GCSE - grade 4 or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

  • Experience in building and carpentry with a Level 2 qualification.
  • Relevant Vocational.Teaching experience as appropriate for area of delivery.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students.
  • Knowledge of relevant software tools and technologies used in the construction sector.
  • Current full UK driving licence (with access to a vehicle).
  • 2 years experience of delivering training.
  • Construction industry experience in building & carpentry
  • Effective time management skills
  • Work under pressure and use initiative and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills- written and verbal
  • GCSE Grade C or above equivalent in literacy, numeracy, ICT or other media as appropriate)
  • Be able to work to deadlines and under pressure
  • Full, clean UK driving licence
  • Passion for wanting to teach and supporting learners to succeed
  • Excellent communication and the ability to connect with students
  • Patience, empathy and proactive attitude
  • Commitment to CPD and professional development

Nova was established as a Private Training Provider in September 1992 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2022. We are part of the recruitment agency Staff Select Ltd. Over the years Nova has operated a number of youth and adult training programmes and also delivered employer led programmes and qualifications such as NVQ's and Apprenticeships. Our Head Office has always remained in Willenhall Town Centre (within Walsall Local Authority). Historically we have delivered training programmes across all four Black Country Local Authorities. In 2001 we opened our first centre outside the Black Country, setting up a motor vehicle workshop in Telford.
