Job Overview
This is a full-time substantive post. The post is for ten sessions per week of which, typically, seven will be for direct clinical care (DCC) and three for supporting professional activity (SPA), as specified in the Welsh Consultant contract.
The post will have a commitment to Anaesthesia for theatre with a sub-speciality interest in General Surgery and Urology.
The remaining DCC sessions will be for General Anaesthesia, for a mix of elective lists which may include at least one fixed flexible session. This is open to negotiation depending on the interests of the successful candidate and the needs of the department. The seven DCC sessions equate to four (half day) clinical sessions and participation in the Consultant General/Obstetric on-call rota.
The on-call requirement for this post is to join the General Anaesthetic and Obstetric on-call rota. This is currently a 1:11 rota. Duties are to provide cover for emergency anaesthesia for all surgical specialties including District General Hospital (DGH) level paediatrics. There is a separate Consultant on-call rota for Critical Care.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
