Job Purpose
The Consultant Formula One Fuels Development is responsible for leading the technical development and delivery of sustainable Formula One fuel solutions across the full value chain, from research and formulation through to trackside deployment and performance validation for the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team.
The role applies deep technical expertise and analytical insight to drive the fuels development workstream, ensuring alignment between fuel design, engineering requirements, and race performance objectives. It oversees formulation development, regulatory approvals, and race-level quality control, ensuring operational excellence across sourcing, formulation, and deployment while enabling fuel-driven performance gains within the FIA 2026 sustainable fuel regulations.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role addresses complex cross-functional challenges and sets priorities aligned with programme objectives. It works closely with internal R&D teams and external partners, including Honda and fuel blending suppliers, while supporting integration with power unit, lubricant, and chassis performance systems.
As a recognised subject matter expert, the role provides technical guidance and influences key decisions on fuel performance and development strategy. It also acts as an informal group leader across the geographically distributed F1 science team, coordinating activities, aligning priorities, and ensuring effective collaboration and delivery across distributed technical contributors without direct line management responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership – F1 Fuels Domain
- Provide advanced subject matter expertise in fuel chemistry and development, leading the design, testing, and optimisation of sustainable F1 fuel formulations to meet performance, regulatory, and operational requirements.
- Ensure translation of laboratory research into track-ready solutions and support rapid iteration and continuous refinement of fuel formulations across the race lifecycle.

Programme & Delivery Ownership
- Lead and coordinate the F1 fuels development workstream, ensuring effective planning, prioritisation, budgeting and execution of activities across research, testing, and operational phases.
- Drive delivery against performance targets and ensure alignment with broader F1 programme objectives.
Stakeholder Coordination & Integration
- Act as the primary technical interface across internal and external stakeholders, including Aramco, Valvoline, Aston Martin, Honda, and external blending partners, ensuring alignment of priorities, including integration of fuel solutions with power unit, lubricant, and vehicle performance systems, and effective collaboration across the fuel programme ecosystem.
External Partner & Supplier Management
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with external technical partners and suppliers, ensuring quality, consistency, and performance of delivered products.
- Coordinate technical discussions, support joint development initiatives, and manage technical inputs into the overall programme.
Informal Leadership & Capability Development
- Provide technical guidance and informal leadership to the geographically distributed science team and other contributors across the fuel development lifecycle, aligning activities, sharing expertise, and ensuring consistent delivery standards without direct line management responsibility.
Trackside & Operational Integration
- Ensure seamless integration between fuel development activities and trackside operations, supporting decision-making during race and test events through technical insight, data interpretation, and rapid problem-solving in high-pressure environments.
Compliance & Regulatory Assurance
- Ensure all fuel products and processes comply with FIA technical regulations and applicable industry standards, maintaining rigorous testing, validation, and documentation practices to support compliance and audit requirements.
Data-Driven Performance Optimisation
- Oversee the collection, interpretation, and application of technical and operational data to drive continuous improvement in fuel performance, reliability, and efficiency, supporting engineering decision-making across the F1 programme.

- Support the development of sustainable fuel solutions in alignment with FIA regulations and drive innovation in fuel formulation and combustion performance, including identifying opportunities to translate F1 fuel innovations into broader applications where relevant.

Tasks
- Participate proactively in performance management activities, including continuous goal setting, continuous performance conversations and development activities to support increasing performance of the organisation.
- Ensure regular updates through reporting, presentations and line manager update meetings to support status reporting and information sharing.
- Deliver high-performance, regulation-compliant, high-quality F1 fuels to meet race schedules and partner development requirements.
- Motivate and coordinate direct and indirect technical and commercial partners to meet race objectives.
- Contribute to measurable improvements in power unit output, efficiency, and reliability.
- Support a continuous innovation pipeline in sustainable fuel technologies.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties as directed by line managers.

- Regular contact with counterparts in Valvoline Global, Aston Martin Race Team and Honda.

Education

Master's Degree or equivalent level in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Automotive Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Chemistry
- Or a related field
In lieu of a formal university degree, substantial and progressively responsible professional experience within the relevant job family may be considered equivalent, provided the candidate demonstrates the required proficiency expected.
Experience
General Experience
- Typically requires 15+ years of relevant experience in own area of expertise to fully competent level.
- Subject matter expert level in fuels chemistry is highly desirable.
Managerial / Mentoring Experience
- Typically requires 4 to 6 years of experience providing advanced or strategic mentoring to senior professionals or specialists.
- Shapes professional standards and ways of working through the transfer of critical and often scarce expertise.
- Sponsors onboarding and development of high-impact specialists, ensuring readiness for complex, high-risk, or business-critical challenges.
Additional (Preferred)
- Experience in fuel combustion and engine performance development.
- Experienced in technical programme management.
- Experience of working in the motorsport sector, preferably Formula One.
- Ability to operate effectively in high-pressure, continuously evolving, performance-driven environments.
- Effective communication skills with a wide range of stakeholders from operational level to board level.
