We are actively seeking an additional Consultant Gastroenterologist with an interest in therapeutic GI Endoscopy to support the growth and evolution of our Gastroenterology services.
Key Details
Consultant Gastroenterologist & Physician
- Contract: Permanent, Full time – 10 sessions per week
- On-call GI Bleed Consultant on-call rota – 1 in 8 weeks (7-day on-calls)
- AAC Date TBC (2nd September 2026)
Job Plan
- Consultant of the Week 7-Day Inpatient (1:8 weeks)
- Outpatient Duties 7:8 weeks
- Emergency Endoscopy 24 Hr Out of Hours Upper GI Emergency Endoscopy (1:8)
- Direct Clinical Care (DCC) 7.5 PA
- Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) 2.5 SPA OFF ward (7:8 weeks), 1.5 SPA On Ward (1:7 weeks)
- Total PAs 10 PA (with options to increase to max 12 PA by discussion)

The Department
Our Gastroenterology team provides comprehensive care for a wide range of conditions affecting the digestive system, including dyspepsia, gastro-oesophageal reflux, oesophageal dysmotility, and hepatobiliary conditions.
Current team structure:
- Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists
- Gastroenterology Specialist Registrars
- Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Lead Nurse
The department is supported by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, and specialist nurses, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

Person Specification Highlights
Essential
Education & Qualifications
- Hold full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
- Hold MRCP (UK) or an equivalent qualification
- Be on the Specialist Register in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine via one of the following:
- Certificate of Training (CCT)
- Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
- European Community Rights
Experience, Knowledge & Training

- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in General Medicine and Gastroenterology
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within the relevant specialty
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- JAG accreditation in Upper Endoscopy and Colonoscopy (UK trainees)
- Ability to participate in an Emergency Upper Endoscopy rota (including GI bleeds)
Desirable
- Interest and expertise in therapeutic GI endoscopy
- Accreditation in ERCP
- Accreditation in BSCP
Research
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives
Desirable
- Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals in the last 5 years
- Evidence of having undertaken original research
Management & Administrative Experience
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
- Ability to manage and lead the specialty and multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
- Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making
Personal Attributes
