Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist to join a well-established Community Mental Health Service in Scotland.
This community-based post offers the opportunity to provide consultant-led psychiatric care for adults within a multidisciplinary environment, delivering comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients with a wide range of mental health conditions. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within the Community Mental Health Team while contributing to service development, education, clinical governance, and quality improvement.
The service places a strong emphasis on work-life balance, offering protected SPA time, collaborative consultant working, and opportunities to develop specialist interests alongside clinical responsibilities.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-led assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for adults with mental health disorders.
- Lead and support a multidisciplinary Community Mental Health Team.
- Deliver outpatient and community-based psychiatric services.
- Provide clinical leadership for complex patient management and risk assessment.
- Participate in the consultant on-call rota.
- Work closely with General Practice, psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, social work, and other community services.
- Contribute to integrated mental health pathways and service development initiatives.
- Supervise junior doctors and multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Participate in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with professional standards and GMC guidance.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
- MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
- CCT/CESR in General Adult Psychiatry (or within six months of completion).
- Eligibility for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Eligibility for recognition as an Approved Medical Practitioner where applicable.
Desirable
- Completion of Section 22 Training Course.
- Higher postgraduate qualifications or additional specialist training.
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Previous NHS experience.
- Extensive clinical experience in General Adult Psychiatry.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience teaching and supervising junior doctors.
- Broad knowledge of General Adult Psychiatry.
- Excellent diagnostic, assessment, and clinical management skills.
- Leadership and service development experience.
- Strong communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience participating in clinical audit and governance.

- Research experience and publications.
- Previous management experience.

Teaching, Research & Leadership
The successful candidate will have opportunities to:
