Consultant Haematologist Opportunity in Aberystwyth

Build your consultant career in one of Wales' most distinctive regions, joining a supportive Haematology team delivering care across Mid and West Wales.

We are seeking a Consultant Haematologist to join Hywel Dda University Health Board. Based at Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth, this role offers the opportunity to work within a collaborative service while contributing specialist expertise to a well-established team serving communities across four hospital sites.

About the Role

Our team of consultants provides a comprehensive haematology service across West Wales, supporting a broad and varied patient population. The successful candidate will play an important role in delivering high-quality General Haematology services while helping to strengthen and develop subspecialist expertise within the wider department.

Based primarily at Bronglais Hospital, the postholder will work closely with colleagues across the Health Board's hospital network, contributing to a cohesive and patient-centred service. Support for the role includes a Specialty Doctor, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Specialist Haematology Pharmacists, providing a strong multidisciplinary environment focused on delivering the best possible care.

We are looking for a clinician who will bring expertise, collaboration, and a commitment to high standards of patient care. Alongside clinical responsibilities, there will be opportunities to contribute to service development, teaching, and the ongoing evolution of haematology services across the Health Board.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Demonstrate experience in the management of all Haematological conditions.
  • Develop a subspecialty across the health board and work alongside other consultants to contribute to subspecialisation teams.

Inpatients

  • Consult on all inpatients with the local medical team.
  • Provide additional teaching on the management of haematology patients.
  • Liaise with the Acute Oncology Service covering haematology inpatients.

Outpatients

  • Participate in 3-4 clinics per week.
  • Consideration for other subspecialist workload may be considered depending on applicant's experience.
  • Additional input from the local haematology team for patients returning from tertiary centres following treatments.
  • BMA’s are currently done weekly.
  • Phone clinics are encouraged given the rural area and inability to travel for patients.

Laboratory

  • Provide advice and input on blood films and reporting bone marrow reports.
