About the Role

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to work at our Specialist Emergency Care Hospital at Cramlington. This is the first purpose-built hospital of its kind in the country, providing 24/7 EM Consultant presence, as well as Specialty Consultant presence 12 hours each day, 7 days a week.

We are one of the country’s top performing NHS Foundation Trusts, looking after the wellbeing of around half a million people across Northumberland and North Tyneside – one of the largest geographical areas of any NHS trust in England. Recent CQC inspection rated Northumbria Health Care Trust as outstanding overall.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be joining a team of 24 whole time equivalent EM Consultants who provide a 24 hour presence in the ED, 7 days a week. Our Consultant led service means we have the opportunity to work closely together, and the majority of shifts are worked alongside other EM Consultant colleagues. In addition, we have 24 hour SAS/SpR cover. The role is suitable for anyone who is keen to provide a highly visible and hands on approach to EM. We welcome applicants with an interest in various portfolios including paediatrics.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
