Responsibilities:
Consultants have a responsibility to the Chief Executive and a commensurate authority in respect of the reasonable and effective use of such hospital resources and staff as they use and influence.
Each Consultant is expected to deliver their service within the agreed resources available, supported by the responsible Service Manager.
In addition, there is a collective responsibility falling on all Consultants to consult with colleagues, and hence to co-ordinate their individual activities, in order to ensure that the particular clinical service with which they are involved operates effectively.

About the Department:
The Emergency Department is a state-of-the-art £6.2 million new build completed in December 2014 with a 4-bed resuscitation room (1 dedicated paediatric bay), 16 major treatment rooms including an eye/ENT room, an isolation room, facilities for patients with dementia, and internal CBRN decontamination facilities.
There are separate paediatric and adult waiting areas, and a chair-centric observation area with long-ranging views over the Yorkshire countryside. X-ray facilities and a plaster room are within the department and there is an excellent departmental ultrasound machine.

We have a new co-located Urgent Treatment Centre which also has separate paediatric and adult waiting areas which opened in July 2024.
CT services are co-located and supported by 24/7 on-site radiographer cover supporting timely access to CT. There is an excellent co-located psychiatric liaison nurse service.
The department benefits from a purpose-built adjacent multi-specialty Acute Assessment Unit and Ambulatory Care Unit enabling high-quality same-day emergency care (SDEC), and strong collaborative relationships with inpatient specialty colleagues.
Our ED sees over 75,000 patients per year of which around 15,000 are children.
