Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in St Johns Hospital.
The postholder will join a team of enthusiastic and motivated consultant physicians within a unit recognised for its innovation and passion for improvement. The unit has a strong emphasis on medical education and training and working with other specialties and teams.
This job comprises 10 PAs with 2 of these dedicated to subspecialty work of applicant’s interest with options available across the NHS Lothian footprint. These might be in undergraduate teaching, advanced endoscopy, specialist IBD or hepatology and can be discussed pre-interview. Less than full time working will be considered and individual job plans will be negotiated depending on candidate’s interests. The working hours can be arranged to accommodate non-working days during the week to strike a good work life balance. On call duties for medicine would be 5 weekends per year.

Inpatient duties involve management of Gastroenterology patients in ward 25, SJH and assessment of inpatient GI referrals, and supervision of the multidisciplinary team. Outpatient duties include outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists. Subspecialty interests are encouraged, and this post supports 2 sessions a week to develop this. Applicants may be interested in IBD, advanced endoscopy, neurogastroenterology, nutrition, hepatology or alternatively roles in undergraduate or post-graduate education, quality improvement and research. Options can be discussed pre-interview.
General Medicine duties will involve weekend on-call duties for Medicine at St John’s Hospital, based in the Medical Admissions Unit as well as the Emergency Medical Assessment (EMA) where GP referrals and ambulatory patients are managed. There is a Level 1 Enhanced Care area adjacent to the Medical Admissions Unit.

As well as clinical duties, this post will have a commitment to the delivery of undergraduate teaching at St John’s Hospital, in particular teaching within a clinical environment and simulation training. Other non-clinical interests are encouraged for example management, post-graduate education, quality improvement, and research. A large number of trainee doctors rotate through the medical unit and the successful applicant may wish to have a role in educational supervision.
