Consultant in General Surgery (Colorectal Surgery Interest)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a substantive Consultant in General Surgery with a special interest in Colorectal Surgery. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated surgeon with broad experience in General and Emergency Surgery to join our integrated surgical service across NHS Ayrshire & Arran.
The successful applicant will complement a well-established team of Consultant General Surgeons with subspecialty interests and will participate in the General Surgery emergency on-call rota at University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC), currently operating at 1:12.
The post-holder will join a colorectal team comprising five Consultant Colorectal Surgeons at UHC and three at University Hospital Ayr (UHA). The role will require delivery of clinical services across both hospital sites as part of a modern, integrated surgical model.

About NHS Ayrshire & Arran
NHS Ayrshire & Arran serves a population of approximately 366,000 across the West of Scotland. The two main acute hospital sites are University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC) and University Hospital Ayr (UHA), both offering a wide range of secondary and specialist services.
University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC)
UHC is a 539-bed acute hospital providing a broad range of services including:
- Intensive Care Medicine
- Trauma Services
- Robotic Surgery
- ENT Surgery
- Maxillofacial Surgery
- Paediatrics
- Gynaecology
The Ayrshire Maternity Unit is located on the Crosshouse site within a modern, purpose-built facility.
University Hospital Ayr (UHA)
UHA is a 343-bed hospital providing both acute and elective services, including:
- Urology
- Elective Orthopaedic Surgery
- Bariatric Surgery
Surgical Services
Both UHC and UHA provide acute general surgical and emergency surgical services. Following recent changes in Critical Care provision, all Level 3 critical care is now centralised at UHC, with Level 2 care provided across both sites. This has supported ongoing development and redesign of emergency and elective surgical pathways.
Further service development is planned, including the continued optimisation of University Hospital Ayr as a centre for high-volume elective surgery.

Location
Both hospitals benefit from excellent transport links:
- Approximately 30 minutes from Glasgow via the M77 (UHC)
- Approximately 45 minutes from Glasgow via the M77 (UHA)
- Regular rail services to Glasgow and surrounding areas
- Glasgow Prestwick International Airport located centrally between both sites (approx. 15 minutes’ drive)
- Free parking available at all clinical sites
About the Role
This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive and forward-looking surgical department during a period of continued service development and transformation. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality colorectal and emergency surgical services across NHS Ayrshire & Arran.
Applicants must have:
- Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise
- An entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery, or be within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview
