Main Duties of the Job

Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology

This is a new part-time 6 PA post in Paediatric Immunology and Infectious Diseases to join NHS and academic colleagues to provide a clinical service in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at Southampton Children’s Hospital, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

You should have or be within 6 months of being awarded a CCT (or equivalent) in paediatrics (subspeciality paediatric immunology & infectious diseases).

Key Working Relationships

  • Department of Infection (microbiology, virology and adult infectious diseases)
  • Department of Immunology (adult clinicians and laboratory)
  • Paediatric Rheumatology team
  • TB and BCG centre (Royal South Hants Hospital)

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

In addition to conducting inpatient and regional consultations, supporting the delivery of the paediatric antimicrobial stewardship and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (P-OPAT) services, outpatient services and supporting the regional paediatric infectious diseases and immunology network, you will be expected to lead on the delivery of HCID surge requirements for children within University Hospital Southampton, in line with NHSE requirements as a designated surge centre. You will lead the Paediatric HIV service.

Clinical cover is delivered as a consultant of the week model and will be via annualised hours. You would be expected to provide consultant of the week cover for 14 weeks per year. There is also a 24/7 on-call rota providing telephone advice to the Children’s Hospital and to the region – you would provide 1 in 4 on-call cover.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of paediatric HIV, including HIV PENTA course
  • Training in HCID preparedness

Aptitudes and Skills

Essential criteria

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
