Job Overview
Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is seeking two new Consultant Neurology posts with expertise in Neuromuscular Disorders. These posts are part of the South West Neuromuscular Operational Delivery Network, providing care for people living with Neuromuscular conditions in Bristol, Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall.
Main Duties of the Job
The posts will involve the diagnosis, management, and care of people living with Neuromuscular Disorders, including muscular dystrophies, neuropathies, CIDP, and myasthenia. The service is multi-disciplinary, supported by Neuromuscular Care Advisors, Specialist Physiotherapists, and a Specialist Psychologist. The post holders will join the team in providing an education programme for professionals and patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide outpatient clinics in Bristol and Plymouth
- One post will provide clinics in Truro (12 clinics or 6 days per year)
- One post will provide clinics in North Devon (12 clinics or 6 days per year)
- Contribute to the existing services in Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and lead these services across the South West Neuromuscular Operational Delivery Network
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Within 6 months of obtaining expected CCT date at the time of interview, CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview
Desirable Criteria
- Higher academic qualification, e.g., MD, PhD, or equivalent
Experience
Essential Criteria
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Neuromuscular conditions
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy

- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty

Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of management/leadership experience and/or qualifications and courses
Teaching and Training
Essential Criteria
- Experience of teaching medical students and AHP’s
- Experience of supervising trainees
- Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team

- Formal teaching/ education qualification
- Educational Supervisor training completed
Research
Essential Criteria
- Knowledge of the principles involved in research
- Evidence of involvement in research
Desirable Criteria
- Additional academic experience and qualifications, e.g., PhD
- Evidence of publication of peer-reviewed academic papers
Governance
Essential Criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
- Positive approach to evidence-based practice
- Evidence of recent and regular engagement with continuing professional development (CPD) scheme

- Agreement and ability to travel to and work in other Bristol NHS Foundation Trust sites necessitated by the role and agreement and ability to travel to outreach clinics in the South West, including Devon and Cornwall

- Trained as a Consultant Appraiser
