Requirements
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Job Description
Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week) post based in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
This is a new post which will support the expanding stroke and neurology services in NHS Lothian. The successful applicant will join an enthusiastic and motivated team of stroke physicians and neurologists. Our services have a passion for education, training, quality improvement, and clinical research.

The job is for a Consultant in Neurology and Stroke Medicine and will be for up to 10 PAs which will be split between stroke medicine (hyperacute stroke management, integrate stroke unit, TIA, and life after stroke clinic) and Neurology. The neurological aspects of the post will be primarily delivered at St John’s Hospital and will comprise a combination of outpatient clinic work and neurology liaison with acute medicine. Less than full-time working will be considered.
The postholder will spend their clinical time between the RIE and St. John’s Hospital with sessional commitments to leading the hyperacute stroke team responsible for assessing patients with acute presentations, and overseeing the delivery of thrombolysis and thrombectomy. This will involve ward rounds on the hyperacute stroke unit (HASU), care of patients in the stroke unit, and involvement in the regular departmental consultant meetings, radiology, quality improvement, and research meetings.
The post holder will contribute to the regional telestroke rota which supports decision-making outwith 9-5 Monday-Friday and extended hours working on the RIE site into evenings and weekend days. Non-clinical interests are encouraged. The successful candidate will contribute to service planning; delivery of undergraduate teaching; supervision of junior doctors; clinical governance and quality improvement, and growing the clinical research portfolio including acting as principal investigator (PI) for network-sponsored trials.
