Our epilepsy team is confident that these newly available and better priced products can make a big difference for many children and they are therefore looking for an enthusiastic colleague who wants to make a difference for these children. ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Consultant Paediatrician to join our pioneering telemedicine clinic specialising in cannabinoid-based medicinal products (CBMPs) for children with drug-resistant epilepsy. This is a unique opportunity to develop expertise in an emerging field of paediatric neurology while working flexibly from anywhere in the world. You do not need any prior experience in medical cannabis. We provide comprehensive training, ongoing clinical supervision, and robust governance structures to support your development from initial onboarding through to independent prescribing.
CLINICAL SUPERVISION & GOVERNANCE
You will be directly supervised by:
- Dr Pramod Mainie, Consultant Paediatrician with an established caseload of children with refractory epilepsy treated with CBMPs
- Professor Michael Barnes, UK medical cannabis pioneer and Founder/President of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS)
Professor Barnes is a Consultant Neurologist who wrote the first NHS prescription for medical cannabis in the UK (for Alfie Dingley, 2018) and authored the landmark 2016 report that led to the UK's rescheduling of cannabis. His expertise spans over 20 years in cannabis medicine, including bringing Sativex to market and leading Drug Science's Project Twenty21 research initiative.
Clinical Governance Framework:
- All prescriptions reviewed within 24 hours by senior clinicians to minimise delays for patients while ensuring safety and quality
- Monthly Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings for case discussion, peer learning, and governance oversight
- Initial 3-month supervised period (extendable as needed) with direct case review and mentorship

TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Comprehensive Training Programme Includes:
- Online cannabis medicine training modules covering pharmacology, paediatric prescribing, product selection, adverse event management, and UK regulatory framework
- Membership of the Medical Cannabis Clinicians Society (MCCS), providing access to:
- International peer support network of prescribers
- Prescribing guidelines and product formulary
- Secure online clinical discussion forum
- CPD-accredited events and education
- Supervised case-based learning
- Ongoing mentorship and access to senior clinicians for complex cases
- You will be fully supported at every stage.
PATIENT POPULATION & CLINICAL SCOPE
Patient Demographics:
- Age range: 5-17 years
- Condition: Refractory epilepsy (failed ≥2 conventional treatments, which may include anti-seizure medications [ASMs], ketogenic diet, vagal nerve stimulation, corpus callosotomy, or other interventions)
- Treatment approach: CBMPs prescribed as adjunct therapy
Caseload:
- Flexible, depending on your available time
- Minimum commitment: 1 day per week
- Mix of new assessments and follow-up consultations
- All consultations conducted via secure telemedicine platform
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical:
- Conduct remote video consultations with children/families referred for CBMP assessment
- Review medical history, seizure diaries, prior treatment records, and imaging/investigations
- Prescribe cannabinoid-based medicinal products (CBD, THC-containing preparations) in accordance with UK regulatory framework and clinic protocols
- Monitor treatment response, adverse effects, and quality of life outcomes
- Maintain detailed clinical records in accordance with GMC standards and data protection requirements
- Liaise with families, NHS neurologists, and other healthcare professionals as appropriate
Governance & Quality:
- Submit prescriptions for senior clinician review
- Participate in monthly MDT meetings for case discussion, audit, and learning
- Engage in clinical audit and outcome tracking (seizure frequency, quality of life measures, adverse events)
- Contribute to service development and protocol refinement
- Maintain GMC revalidation portfolio and participate in annual appraisal

Professional Development:
- Complete initial training programme and MCCS membership onboarding

- Stay current with emerging evidence in paediatric epilepsy and cannabis medicine
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential:
- GMC Registration: Full registration with licence to practise and specialist registration in Paediatrics
- Clinical Experience: Minimum 5 years' consultant-level or equivalent paediatric experience
- General Medical Council fitness to practise: No current restrictions or conditions on practice
- Safeguarding: Level 3 Safeguarding Children training (or willingness to complete prior to commencement)
- IT & Communication: Confident with telemedicine platforms, electronic health records, and remote working
- Professional Indemnity: Current medical indemnity insurance covering telemedicine and private practice
- Commitment: Minimum 1 clinical day per week
Desirable:
- Experience in paediatric neurology, epilepsy, or complex neurodisability
- Familiarity with drug-resistant epilepsy management and alternative therapies (ketogenic diet, VNS, etc.)
- Prior involvement in clinical governance, audit, or quality improvement
- Interest in emerging therapeutics and evidence-based prescribing
- No prior experience in medical cannabis is required. We actively welcome clinicians new to this field.
REMUNERATION & PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
- Competitive day/session rates
- Paid admin/SPA time included for clinical letters, prior authorizations, MDT attendance, and governance activities
- Flexible working: Choose your own schedule (minimum 1 day/week); evenings/weekends possible if preferred
