Consultant in General Paediatrics with Special Interest in Respiratory Medicine

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Consultant in General Paediatrics with a Special Interest in Respiratory Medicine.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care across acute, inpatient, and ambulatory paediatric services and participate in the paediatric on-call rota. They will support the development and delivery of specialist respiratory services, providing high-quality care in line with national standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led care across acute, inpatient, and ambulatory paediatric services.
  • Participate in the paediatric on-call rota.
  • Support the development and delivery of specialist respiratory services.
  • Manage paediatric respiratory conditions including asthma, recurrent wheeze, chronic cough, bronchiectasis, and sleep-disordered breathing.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated care and improve patient outcomes.
  • Collaborate with specialist nurses, allied health professionals, primary care, and tertiary centres.
  • Contribute to service development, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and teaching.

Working Conditions

  • Work as part of a team of 10 acute paediatric consultants.
  • Participate in a rota which will become 1 in 10 once recruitment is complete.
  • Work during a hot week system where the consultant of the week is on call for general paediatrics and clinics are cancelled for that week.
  • Attend daily handovers, carry out ward rounds, and attend emergencies when required in ED, PAU, or the ward.
  • Carry out safeguarding medicals at the request of police or social services and write reports.
  • Outpatient clinics will be in Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital, including new and follow-up general paediatrics and specialty clinics.
  • Small proportion of resident on calls for the post-holder, which are outlined in the job plan.
  • Resident shifts will be 5 weekday evening shifts over a 10-week period and this is equitably shared by all the acute paediatric consultants.
  • Resident shift is to cover the Paediatric Assessment Unit along with Junior and Middle grade doctors.
