Job Overview
We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant to join the Metabolic Bone Unit for five sessions per week. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a well-established specialist service with a strong track record in the assessment, diagnosis and management of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease across North Wales. The post would particularly suit a clinician with a strong interest in metabolic bone disease who is motivated to contribute to a high-quality, outcomes-focused osteoporosis service, play a key role in its continued evolution, and help shape the future direction of metabolic bone and fracture prevention services across the region through service development and innovation at both local and national levels.
Main duties of the job
- Provide consultant-led care within the Metabolic Bone Unit, delivering specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
- Undertake outpatient activity within the Metabolic Bone Unit, including new and follow-up clinics for patients with osteoporosis and metabolic bone disorders.
- Provide clinical oversight of DXA reporting, including direct reporting sessions and supervision of reports generated by radiographers and Fracture Liaison Service nurses, ensuring consistency and quality of interpretation.
- Participate in the interpretation and clinical application of DXA scan results and support the ongoing development of bone densitometry services.
- Deliver specialist clinics related to bone health, including treatment monitoring clinics, and ensure the appropriate initiation and ongoing management of osteoporosis therapies, including parenteral and specialist treatments.
- Provide clinical advice and support to primary care through written correspondence and advice services relating to osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings within the Metabolic Bone Unit and contribute to the discussion of complex cases, treatment decisions and service development.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Specialist Registration in Rheumatology or due to obtain CCT within 6 months of interview date. CESR applicants must have GMC Specialist Registration at the point of application
- MRCP or equivalent.

Desirable criteria
- Specialist Registration in Geriatric Medicine, Endocrinology or another relevant specialty.
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 4 years supervised training in a relevant specialty training programme (or equivalent), with substantial experience in the assessment and management of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
- Demonstrable specialist interest and experience in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.
- Ability to report DXA Scans and provide treatment recommendations.
- Experience in managing patients with osteoporosis.
- Familiarity with NHS.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable criteria
- Recent clinical experience or training in Rheumatology and/or Metabolic Bone Disease
- Experience of Fracture Liaison Services
Essential Criteria
Management and Administrative Experience
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues in a multidisciplinary team setting.
- Ability and willingness to work within NHS performance frameworks and targets.
- Aligns own values with those of the Health Board
Desirable criteria
- Management experience.
- Experience of service development and leadership.
Teaching/Audit Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply research evidence to clinical practice.
- Experience of clinical audit and quality improvement.
Desirable criteria
- Active commitment to teaching and training.
- Evidence of leading audit, quality improvement or service evaluation activity.
