Salary: £170,000 per annum plus stipend for MD responsibilities
Full-time: 37.5 hours per week
Priory Hospital Southampton has an opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist/Medical Director to join the team.
The role will include participation in the Medical On-Call rota and contributing to the out-of-hours management of the hospital, as agreed with the post holder.
Priory Hospital Southampton, Marchwood, Southampton is a residential mental health service providing acute and eating disorder care for adult males and females. It is accessible by public transport, with a bus stop at the end of the access road and Totton railway station approximately 5 miles away, with Redbridge station around 7 miles away. Because of the service's location, we recommend access by vehicle or the ability to drive.
What you'll be doing
We are looking for an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join Priory in a combined clinical and Medical Director role. Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will dedicate one day per week to providing medical leadership, governance, and operational support at site level, with an additional stipend for the Medical Director responsibilities.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide Responsible Clinician (RC) responsibilities for up to 10 inpatients and manage your own clinical caseload.
- Lead the ward MDT and provide clinical supervision to the Speciality Doctor.
- Provide medical leadership across the site, supporting high standards of clinical governance and patient care.
- Lead the recruitment, induction, appraisal, and revalidation processes for medical staff.
- Oversee medical staffing arrangements, including out-of-hours cover and annual leave planning.
- Work alongside the Hospital Director, Clinical Directors, and HR to manage medical staff performance and governance matters.
- Chair and contribute to Site Clinical Governance meetings and support the management of significant clinical issues and concerns.
- Represent clinical expertise and innovation when working with commissioners, partners, and other key stakeholders.

What you'll bring to the role
Essential for the role
Applicants must hold MRCPsych (or an equivalent qualification), a CCT (or equivalent), and be included on the GMC Specialist Register, along with Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician status. They must demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills, and experience relevant to the specialty, the ability to work within and lead a team, and a commitment to shared leadership, collaborative working, and service improvement. Candidates should also have evidence of ongoing continuous professional development.
