I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Job Duties/Key responsibilities:
- Develop content – specifically explainers (see here as an example), reels and clips – for our digital channels. This includes channels we already have a presence on like X, LinkedIn, Bluesky and YouTube, as well as channels we want to develop, like TikTok.
- Design content for channels from the Centre’s extensive archive of research and evidence.
- Design templates and ways of working for each of our digital channels (understanding that content should be optimised to suit different audiences and algorithmic preferences).
- Work alongside the Communications and Campaigns Manager to evolve and develop our podcast and grow its audience and reach. This includes editing and sharing clips and promoting the podcast content across our channels.
- Take the lead in developing one of our external social media channels.
- Helping / attending our events and support the public affairs and media team members.
Candidate profile:
As with all communications professionals, you’ll need to write well and enjoy working on multiple projects at the same time. To succeed in the role, you’ll need some technical proficiency, and those requirements are outlined below. Don’t be put off if you don’t meet all the criteria – this is a development role and we don’t expect you to be an expert.
Prior work experience in communications would be helpful but it’s not essential.
