Contract Applications Test Engineer - Windows / Networking

Location: Derbyshire - Fully Onsite
Contract: Initial 6-12 Months
Day Rate: Negotiable DOE
IR35: Outside IR35

Security Clearance: Current SC/DV clearance is preferred. Candidates whose SC/DV clearance has been placed on hold within the last 12 months may also be considered, subject to eligibility for transfer/reactivation.

We're supporting a specialist technology and engineering business in Derbyshire with the appointment of an experienced Applications Test Engineer for an initial 6-12 month contract.

You'll be testing Windows-based applications used within complex networking and communications environments. This is a hands-on testing role covering everything from application functionality and usability through to integration with network-connected devices.

You'll work alongside software and systems engineers within an established technical team, helping ensure applications and associated systems perform reliably before release.

Due to the secure nature of the projects, this assignment is 100% onsite in Derbyshire.

The Role

You'll be responsible for testing Windows desktop applications and the way they interact with wider networking systems and devices.

  • Creating and executing test cases and test procedures.
  • Functional, regression, system and integration testing.
  • Testing Windows/.NET desktop applications.
  • Validating application workflows, usability and UI functionality.
  • Testing communication between software applications and network-connected devices.
  • Investigating, reproducing and documenting software defects.
  • Analysing network traffic using Wireshark or similar tools.
  • Testing networking and device management functionality, including SNMP.
  • Supporting requirements validation and traceability.
  • Producing clear test documentation and reports.
  • Working closely with software developers and systems engineers to troubleshoot issues.
  • Contributing to test automation where appropriate.

What We're Looking For

We're particularly interested in Test Engineers with experience across a combination of:

  • Windows desktop application testing.
  • Microsoft.NET-based applications.
  • Functional, system, regression and integration testing.
  • Test case and test procedure creation.
  • Requirements-based testing.
  • UI and usability testing.
  • Defect investigation and management.
  • Networking technologies and protocols.
  • TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, DHCP, DNS and VPNs.
  • SNMP and network device management.
  • Wireshark or other packet/network analysis tools.
  • Technical documentation and test reporting.

Experience testing applications that interact directly with networking, communications or security hardware would be particularly useful.

Useful Additional Experience

Any of the following would be advantageous:

  • Python scripting.
  • Test automation tools or frameworks.
  • REST API testing.
  • Linux.
  • Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Network+, CCNA or similar networking knowledge/qualifications.
  • Previous experience within Defence, Government, Cyber Security, communications or another high-integrity engineering environment.

Security Clearance: Current SC/DV clearance is preferred. Candidates whose SC/DV clearance has been placed on hold within the last 12 months may also be considered, subject to eligibility for transfer/reactivation.

Due to the nature of the projects, applicants will also need to meet the relevant nationality and security eligibility requirements.

This is a fully onsite position in Derbyshire.
