Contracts Manager - Highways & Civil Engineering
Salary: Up to £73,000 + £5,500 Car Allowance + Benefits - Oldham
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Contracts Manager to oversee the successful delivery of multiple highways and civil engineering projects across the North West. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, public realm, and environmental improvement schemes.
The Role
As Contracts Manager, you will take overall responsibility for multiple projects from pre-construction through to completion. Projects typically include:
- Town centre highway improvement schemes
- Junction reconstructions
- Cycleways and footpaths
- Public realm and urban landscaping projects
- Heritage restoration schemes
- Parks and environmental improvement works
You will manage project programmes, resources, budgets, and site teams, whilst ensuring works are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. You'll also work closely with clients, local authorities, consultants, and subcontractors throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Delivery
- Oversee multiple contracts from pre-construction to handover.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
- Manage project programmes and monitor progress against key milestones.
- Maintain strong client relationships and attend regular project meetings.
- Lead and support operational teams to achieve successful project outcomes.
Health & Safety
- Promote and maintain the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Support audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with current legislation and best practice.
Planning & Commercial Management
- Develop construction programmes and resource plans.
- Monitor project performance, costs, and profitability.
- Support value engineering initiatives and identify efficiencies.
- Work closely with commercial teams to manage contractual obligations.

Team Leadership
- Lead, develop, and mentor site-based teams.
- Support recruitment, performance management, and staff development.
- Foster a positive, collaborative working culture.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Contracts Manager within highways or civil engineering.
- Strong knowledge of project delivery, construction methodologies, and contract management.
- Commercial awareness and budget management experience.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- NVQ Level 7 in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification preferred.
