Senior Data Engineer - Contract
London | Hybrid, 1 day per week
3–6 months | Inside IR35
£600–£800 per day

We’re partnering with a large, complex global organisation looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to provide immediate technical leadership across its data engineering function.
This is a senior, hands-on contract for someone who can quickly understand an established data estate, identify opportunities for improvement and set a high standard across engineering quality, performance and delivery.
Responsibilities
- Designing and improving engineering patterns across Azure Databricks and Azure Data Factory
- Driving performance and optimisation across caching, indexing, partitioning and cost
- Reviewing code and acting as a technical quality gate
- Improving DevOps practices across CI/CD, environment promotion, branching and release management
- Identifying opportunities to automate repetitive engineering processes
- Working with advanced SQL across existing engineering patterns
- Supporting data quality, governance and orchestration
- Working closely with data engineering, analytics, data science and platform teams
- Helping establish consistent engineering standards across the wider service

Technical experience
We’re looking for strong hands-on experience across:
- Azure Databricks
- Azure Data Factory
- Spark / PySpark
- Advanced SQL and performance optimisation
- CI/CD and Azure DevOps
- Delta Lake and medallion architecture
- Unity Catalog
- Data governance and orchestration
- API-based data ingestion

Experience working with high-volume operational, IoT or telemetry data would be particularly valuable.
This role would suit an experienced Senior or Lead Data Engineer who can hit the ground running, work autonomously and confidently challenge existing engineering approaches where needed.
