Why this job matters
The Commercial Specialist plays a key role in managing contracts throughout their lifecycle, helping to ensure they deliver the right commercial and operational outcomes.
Working closely with commercial, programme, legal, finance, procurement and operational teams, you’ll ensure contractual obligations are understood, risks are identified and managed, and strong governance is maintained.
You’ll coordinate cross-functional activities aligned to the customer strategy and roadmap, assess the impact of strategic plans on contractual services and P&L, and support the effective governance of contract changes.
The role is also responsible for ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, managing commercial risks and protecting the organisation’s commercial interests, while building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
This is a key role at the heart of contract delivery, bringing together commercial, financial and operational priorities to drive successful outcomes and deliver value for customers.
What you’ll be doing
- Own and manage the P&L performance of Defence contracts, monitoring revenue, costs and financial risks to support successful delivery.
- Manage contracts throughout their lifecycle, from contract creation and mobilisation through to delivery, exit and termination.
- Complete regular contract reviews and ensure compliance with internal governance and contractual requirements.
- Manage financial forecasts in partnership with the contract finance team, identifying and addressing potential risks and opportunities.
- Ensure contractual obligations are delivered effectively, with appropriate risk management throughout the contract lifecycle.
- Identify, assess and record contractual and commercial risks, taking action to mitigate them.
- Work closely with third-party suppliers and partners to support contract delivery.
- Support business-as-usual activities, projects and new change proposals across the contract.
- Build strong relationships with contract owners, end users and customers, including regular customer-facing engagement.
- Create and deliver effective contract exit and termination plans.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities to strengthen contract and business development processes.
- Support the effective governance of contracts, ensuring the right processes and controls are in place from creation through to execution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
