Job Description

About Abbey Logistics Group

Abbey Logistics Group is the UK’s leading bulk liquid and powder tanker logistics specialist, providing safe, reliable and innovative transport and warehousing solutions to customers across the food, chemicals, polymers and construction sectors. Supported by a nationwide network of depots, we deliver high-quality, compliant and customer-focused logistics services every day.

We are looking for an experienced Contract & Transport Manager to oversee the operational performance, customer service delivery, and financial management of a key logistics contract. Align business performance with customer expectations, prepare, manage, and monitor KPIs daily to ensure the business achieves agreed service levels.

The successful candidate will ensure contractual service levels are exceeded while maintaining strong relationships with customers, internal teams, and other external bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and comply with the Company’s Operator Licence (O Licence) undertakings, relevant legislation, Company policies and procedures, with appropriate systems and controls in place to ensure ongoing compliance within the Traffic Office.
  • Manage and provide strategic and tactical direction of the team, ensuring the department operates efficiently, effectively and in line with business objectives.
  • Ensure sufficient operational resource and capacity is available to protect customer supply chains, including effective management of drivers, vehicles, fleet and agency and subcontractor resource.
  • Manage capacity modelling and demand planning, maintaining a strong relationship with the customer to ensure ALG responds effectively to changes in customer volumes and operational requirements.
  • Maintain strong relationships with customers, meeting with customers at the frequency established with the Director and ensuring customer requirements and expectations are consistently understood and delivered.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including unions (if applicable), to support positive employee relations, operational delivery and customer service.
  • Take overall responsibility for contract service levels, customer cost statements, supplier management and delivery against agreed contractual and customer KPIs.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of cost-efficient daily transport plans, optimising operational resources and improving fleet and driver utilisation to maximise efficiency and service performance.
  • Promote and maintain a strong health, safety and compliance culture, ensuring Company standards and relevant legislation are consistently adhered to, risks are promptly addressed and reporting systems are maintained to a high standard.
  • Identify and deliver operational efficiencies and continuous improvement opportunities, including leading projects, developing business cases and implementing initiatives that improve productivity, service, utilisation and cost performance.
  • Work collaboratively across the wider business to improve operational performance and enhance the overall customer experience.
  • Manage customer complaints and service issues, ensuring they are investigated, resolved and closed within agreed SLA timescales, with appropriate corrective actions implemented.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial and operational reporting, including forecasting, budgets, customer KPI suites, performance analysis and customer cost reporting, in line with business and customer requirements.
  • Manage operational expenditure within agreed budgets, including authorising expenditure and validating costs within approved P&L authorisation levels.
  • Manage agency labour and associated costs in accordance with agreed budgets, operational requirements and business objectives.
  • Promote and consistently adhere to Company policies, procedures, values and legislative requirements, ensuring these are embedded throughout the Transport Operations function.
  • Provide leadership, direction and strategic input to the leadership team, supporting effective decision-making and the achievement of business objectives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
