Controls & Commissioning Engineer

6 month initial contract
£45 per hour
Outside IR35

Are you an experienced Controls & Commissioning Engineer with strong PLC, HMI and commissioning experience? Are you looking for your next project?

Job Summary:

As a Controls & Commissioning Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting PLC / HMI software testing, FAT, Pre-FAT, iFAT and commissioning activities across projects, supplier facilities and project locations in the UK, Turkey and Vietnam. You will support Hydraulic Power Unit packages and CAFS / INERT fire suppression control panels, including software readiness, controlled software updates, Cause & Effect Matrix verification, functional testing, troubleshooting and commissioning support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • PLC & HMI: Support PLC and HMI software testing, verification, programming, troubleshooting and modifications using Siemens TIA Portal, WinCC and/or Rockwell Studio 5000.
  • FAT & Commissioning: Support and deliver FAT, Pre-FAT, iFAT, SAT, commissioning, loop checks, functional testing and customer witness testing.
  • Controls Engineering: Carry out I/O verification, control system testing, instrument troubleshooting and commissioning across safe area and ATEX environments.
  • Documentation: Produce and review FDS, Control Philosophy documents, SLDs, Cause & Effect Diagrams, Network Architecture Diagrams, Instrument Lists, I/O Lists, Equipment Data Sheets, Load Schedules and Cable Schedules.
  • Electrical & Control Design: Support circuit protection design, cable sizing, electrical power distribution, panel design and wiring, AutoCAD Electrical mark-ups, functional electrical schematics and P&ID interpretation.
  • Issue Resolution: Troubleshoot and resolve PLC, HMI, instrumentation and controls issues, supporting software issue closure and punch list management.
  • Supplier & Client Liaison: Work directly with engineering, project, supplier and customer teams to resolve technical issues and ensure controls systems are ready for key project milestones.

Essential experience needed:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Controls / Instrumentation & Control Engineer
  • Proven experience with:
    • Siemens TIA Portal
    • Siemens WinCC
    • Siemens PCS7 (desirable)
    • Rockwell Studio 5000 (desirable)
    • FactoryTalk (desirable)
    • PLC programming and troubleshooting
    • HMI development and modification
    • FAT, Pre-FAT, iFAT and SAT
    • Commissioning and loop checks
    • Functional testing and software issue resolution
    • Instrumentation and Control systems
    • ATEX / hazardous area environments
    • I/O verification and control system testing
    • P&ID interpretation
    • Pneumatic and hydraulic control systems
  • Experience working within industrial, marine, oil & gas or packaged equipment environments would be highly advantageous.
  • Working knowledge of: IEC 61508, 61511, SIL concepts, LOPA methodology, Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), Cause & Effect verification

The successful candidate should be a practical, hands-on engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and actively supporting project delivery. The position is not intended to be primarily project management focused, so the successful candidate should be comfortable performing detailed engineering, troubleshooting, testing and commissioning activities directly.
