What You Would Do
Typical responsibilities could include:
- Designing and developing control system logic, algorithms and architectures to meet functional and safety requirements
- Programming PLCs, microcontrollers or control platforms using standard languages (ladder logic, structured text, function block diagram)
- Developing SCADA, HMI and supervisory interfaces to monitor and manage controlled processes
- Commissioning, testing and validating control systems in live or near-live environments
- Documenting control system designs, specifications, test protocols and as-built records
- Collaborating with mechanical, electrical and software engineering teams to integrate control solutions
- Troubleshooting and optimising control system performance during and after deployment
- Supporting ongoing maintenance, updates and improvement of deployed systems

What You Could Bring
Most roles of this type require the following:
Must-have
- Degree-level qualification in engineering (mechanical, electrical, control systems or equivalent discipline)
- Proven experience designing and programming control systems in industrial, manufacturing or infrastructure environments
- Proficiency with PLC programming (ladder logic, structured text, function block diagram) and at least one major PLC platform (Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley, Beckhoff or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of SCADA, HMI development tools and real-time control principles
- Familiarity with electrical schematics, control wiring standards and safety-related control system requirements
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills; ability to work independently and collaborate across technical teams
- Right to work in the United Kingdom
Nice-to-have
- Experience with distributed control systems, IoT integration or edge computing in automation
- Knowledge of industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC UA, Profibus, EtherCAT)
- Exposure to IEC 61131-3 or equivalent control system standards
- Experience with version control, CI/CD pipelines or DevOps practices in embedded systems
- Familiarity with safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 61508) or functional safety design
