Control Systems Engineer
Nuclear & Safety-Critical Engineering
- Duration: 12-Month Contract
- Rate: £50–£55 per hour (Umbrella, Inside IR35)
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Working: Hybrid – typically 2–3 days per week in the office
- Security Clearance: BPSS required (SC eligible)
- Travel: UK travel required at key project stages
The Opportunity
Are you a Control Systems Engineer with strong PLC experience looking for your next challenge?
This is an opportunity to move beyond routine PLC work and take ownership of complex, safety-critical engineering projects within the nuclear sector.
You’ll join a technically strong and collaborative engineering team, working on systems where quality, reliability, and safety really matter. With exposure across multiple PLC and SCADA platforms and involvement throughout the project lifecycle, this role is ideal for an engineer looking to broaden their experience and progress towards a Senior Engineer position.
You’ll be involved from initial design and software development through to testing, commissioning, and delivery.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll work across the design, development, integration, testing, and commissioning of control and automation systems.
PLC Software Development
Design and develop PLC software using platforms such as:
- Rockwell – Studio 5000
- Siemens – TIA Portal
- Schneider – EcoStruxure

HMI / SCADA
Develop and configure HMI and SCADA systems, including:
- Rockwell FactoryTalk View ME/SE
- Schneider AVEVA / Citect / Vijeo Designer
- Siemens WinCC / WinCC Flexible
- InTouch / Wonderware or similar platforms
Full Project Lifecycle
You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to projects from concept through to live commissioning, including:
- Concept and detailed design
- PLC software development
- System build, development, and integration
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Customer Acceptance Testing (CAT)
- Site installation support
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Commissioning and start-up
- System validation and troubleshooting
- Technical fault-finding and problem solving
- Production of technical documentation, including design specifications, test documentation, and user manuals
You’ll also work closely with electrical, mechanical, and project delivery teams to ensure integrated solutions are delivered to a high standard.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone with a solid foundation in control systems and PLC engineering who is keen to broaden their technical experience.
Essential
- Degree/HND in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent engineering experience
- Professional experience with PLC and/or SCADA programming within an industrial environment
- Familiarity with IEC 61131 programming languages
- Experience supporting testing, commissioning, or system integration
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams
- Typically 3–7 years’ relevant engineering experience

Desirable
- Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, and/or Schneider PLC platforms
- HMI / SCADA development experience
- Experience within a regulated or safety-critical industry, such as nuclear, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, or similar
- Experience across multiple control system platforms
- A genuine interest in developing broader multi-platform control systems expertise
