Controls / Automation Design Engineer

Location: Lincoln, UK
Contract Type: Contract
Contract Length: 6 Months
Working Hours: 37 hours per week

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity is available for a Controls / Automation Design Engineer to support the development and standardisation of controls and automation design documentation. This role is ideal for an experienced design engineer with strong AutoCAD skills and an understanding of automation and control panel design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and develop a new AutoCAD symbol library for controls and automation applications.
  • Develop symbols and design content for equipment such as:
    • ControlLogix
    • PCS7
    • Step 7 TIA
    • Fire & Gas equipment
    • Vibration monitoring systems
    • Terminals
    • Circuit breakers
  • Create new standard designs and templates within AutoCAD.
  • Update and maintain existing AutoCAD standards and design templates.
  • Convert existing standard junction box designs into AutoCAD.
  • Support the development and standardisation of controls and automation design documentation.
  • Ensure drawings and design outputs are accurate, consistent, and produced to required engineering standards.
  • Work with engineering and controls/automation teams to understand design requirements and translate them into effective AutoCAD solutions.
  • Review existing designs and identify opportunities for standardisation and improvement.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and design records.
  • Ensure all design work is completed accurately and to agreed timescales.
  • Support the wider engineering team with controls and automation design activities as required.

Requirements

  • Strong AutoCAD experience - essential.
  • Previous experience working within an engineering design environment.
  • Understanding of automation and control panel design.
  • Ability to create, modify, and maintain AutoCAD drawings, symbols, and templates.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to engineering design.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and translate requirements into accurate design outputs.
  • Experience working with engineering standards and standardised design processes.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple design activities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with wider engineering teams.

This role suits an engineer who is highly proficient in AutoCAD, has strong attention to detail, and enjoys creating structured, standardised design solutions. The ability to work independently, understand technical requirements, and deliver accurate design work to agreed deadlines is essential.
