Byohm is a UK-based clean-technology company pioneering next-generation wastewater treatment and renewable energy systems. Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Coventry, we develop bio-electrochemical systems that convert wastewater into treated water and renewable fuels.

The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Controls & Electronics Engineer to join our engineering team. Your primary focus is PLC and control panel work, front end and back end: writing and maintaining the PLC logic itself, building the HMI and SCADA layer operators work through, and installing and commissioning those systems on site. We use Siemens PLCs throughout. These are the systems that let us monitor, control and optimise our bio-electrochemical processes, from lab-scale rigs to full-scale deployed equipment.
You will work on new and existing systems in equal measure, developing new control systems from a blank project and taking on the programs already running in our lab and on client sites to extend, debug and improve them. Electronics and PCB design sit alongside as a secondary strand: welcome if you have it, but not something we expect on day one.
It is a practical, delivery-focused role alongside process, software and mechanical colleagues, within an engineering team reporting to the Lead Product Manager. We value engineers who can take a requirement, run with it and see it through to reliable operation in the field. It suits a graduate to mid-level engineer looking to take real ownership.
Key Responsibilities
You will primarily:
- PLC programming (back end): write, structure and test PLC applications in Siemens TIA Portal (ladder, structured text, function block): tag and data structures, I/O configuration, sequencing, interlocks, alarm logic, PID and setpoint control; and maintain, extend and debug our existing programs online.
- Control panels: specify, design, build and wire control panels: schematics, panel layouts, component selection and I/O schedules, then test and commission them on site.
- HMI, SCADA & installation (front end): design and build the operator-facing side (screens, alarms and events, trending, user access and data logging), then install and commission the PLC and HMI systems on site: panel siting, I/O termination, network setup, power-up and loop checks.
- Instrumentation & comms: integrate sensors, actuators, VFDs and instruments over industrial buses (RS-485 / Modbus, CAN) and hard-wired signals (4 to 20 mA, 0 to 10 V, digital I/O), and validate them end to end.

You will also support:
- electronic hardware and PCB design: schematic capture, layout, assembly and bench testing of sensor, signal-conditioning and power circuits. A real plus if you have it, and we will support you in picking it up if you don't.
- firmware and microcontroller work (ESP32 / Arduino / Raspberry Pi) for custom automation and IoT-enabled devices.
- ongoing performance monitoring and improvement of deployed systems on client sites.
- power distribution, energy management and scalability as systems grow from bench to container scale.
- thorough technical documentation such as schematics, wiring diagrams, test reports and handover packs.
- working to relevant safety standards and contributing to design-compliance documentation.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
Applicants without these qualifications will not be considered
- A degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronics or Control Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- PLC programming in the standard IEC 61131-3 languages (ladder, structured text, function block): writing and debugging programs from scratch, and maintaining and extending existing ones. We use Siemens (S7-1500 / TIA Portal, LOGO!); experience on another major platform is fine.
- HMI and SCADA development: operator screens and navigation, alarm handling, trending and data logging.
- Control panel design, wiring and build, plus installation and commissioning on site.
- Industrial comms in practice (RS-485 / Modbus, CAN) between PLCs, VFDs, instruments and field devices.
- Practical instrumentation and field wiring: 4 to 20 mA and 0 to 10 V loops, digital I/O and loop checks.
- Confident with test and commissioning tools: multimeter, oscilloscope, bench PSU, loop calibrator.
- Demonstrable end to end delivery: a project, product or rig you designed and built yourself.

Desirable
- Programming in Python or C / C++ for automation, scripting and data handling.
- Higher-level SCADA and dashboard platforms (WinCC, Ignition, Grafana), and IoT / system integration.
- PCB and electronic hardware design in an EDA tool (we use KiCad; Altium / Eagle transfers).
- Panel build and machinery safety standards (BS EN 61439, BS EN 60204-1), or functional safety.
- Control theory, power / energy management, or embedded RTOS experience.
- Awareness of DSEAR / ATEX and hazardous area concepts, and gas experience: biogas, hydrogen or other process gases (detection, flow and composition measurement, blowers, compressors or gas skids).

Particulars
- Reports to: Lead Product Manager
- Location: On-site, Coventry, West Midlands
- Annual salary: £36,000 (depending on experience)
- Holiday: 25 days + bank holidays + Christmas shutdown
- Hours: 37.5 per week
- Contract: 1-year fixed-term, with potential to become permanent subject to performance
