Job Description

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Controls Engineer with a special purpose machinery background, ideally within the packaging industry. You will be responsible for producing PLC and HMI code for the equipment and production lines that we supply. Working closely with our mechanical and electrical design to ensure that we fulfil the project requirements in a timely and cost-effective manner. While providing an exceptional customer experience by achieving our Operational Excellence goals of on-time shipment, zero warranty, and vertical start-ups at our customers' facility.

Responsibilities

  • Support and promote good teamwork within and outside of engineering, and act in line with the company’s policies and values
  • Responsible for the Design & Development of new Control Systems
  • Upgrading of Existing Equipment & Integration with new Automation / Controls
  • Conduct site surveys & participate in technical meetings on customer sites
  • Development of Functional, Detailed, and Software Design Specifications from User Requirement Specifications
  • PLC (including safety) / HMI Programming – Siemens, Rockwell & others as applicable
  • System design and creation of required robot, PLC, and HMI programming using IEC 61131-3 languages
  • Ensure all engineering produced complies with the relevant Directives and Harmonised standards
  • Perform design and machinery risk assessments to ISO 12100. Implementing countermeasures for identified risks
  • Ensure that all relevant documentation is included in the CE technical file
  • Ensure customer documentation accurately reflects supplied machinery and is complete by the required date
  • Participate in Internal and Customer PDI’s
  • Sign off equipment and projects as ready to ship. Confirming that they are fit for purpose, complete, and tested
  • Start up, commission, and fault find equipment on our customers' sites and support them remotely as required
  • Ensure that the latest version of the equipment software is uploaded and identified on the company network
  • Review site reports daily for assigned products & projects, and ensure any support is given as a matter of urgency
  • Support the Production, Field Service, and Customer Service departments as and when required
  • Support our commercial team & customers, using your technical expertise to find innovative solutions
  • Assist Applications with technical solutions and input on expected timelines
  • Ensure that assigned tasks are completed within agreed timelines and in a cost-effective manner
  • Identify, and support process & product improvements. Utilising L3 tools
  • Support innovation and new product line integration
  • Allocate time engineering to relevant MO through ATM and complete timesheet daily (target absorption 90%)
  • Ensure that expense forms are completed, and receipts submitted to finance within a month
  • Ensure that assigned work areas are kept tidy, free from hazards, and always customer-ready
  • Comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, current legislation, and BWIS company policies & procedures
  • Ensure safety glasses and shoes are always worn in the assembly areas along with additional PPE when required
  • Travel to customer sites and other business locations, which may be at short notice and require overnight stays
  • Be available & have flexibility to work overtime on evenings and weekends when it is required
  • Attend training courses to support your duties and development. Which may not be held at Doncaster and require travel both in the UK or overseas

Minimum Qualifications & Experience

  • 2+ years’ experience in Controls & Automation, ideally in the packaging industry
  • Education in a relevant engineering discipline to HNC/HND qualification
  • Software design experience on Rockwell &/or Siemens PLCs and HMIs is essential
  • Knowledge and experience of using industrial comms protocols (EthernetIP &/or Profinet) is essential
  • Motion and servo control systems experience would be beneficial
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills to deal with the response time pressures that can arise due to the nature of this industry
  • Ability to convert verbal, written, and other media-based information into project documentation
  • Excellent computer skills, being proficient in Microsoft Office packages such as Excel, Word, and Outlook etc.
  • The ability to simultaneously organize and successfully execute multiple project responsibilities.
  • A self-starter with a ‘can do’ flexible attitude.
  • Ability to work as an individual or as part of a team.
  • Drive and determination to succeed.
